Hey guys i'm an intermediate surf from vb/obx area. My go to board lately has been a 5'9 x20x 2 1/2 WRV nugget w/ a 5 fin setup. I am a big fan of riding quad because I like that extra feel of speed through the flatter sections. My ? is what are you all's advice on the best set of fins quads(preferably) or thrusters for the nugget. I current am using TC aqua lines for both quad and whenever I decide to use it as a thruster. I also have a set of K3 glass flex that worked well as a quad. the TCs I feel like give me alot of drive but hold on to the wave way to much when i try and cut back or hit the lip. The K3 gave me a little bit looser feel but still had drive . what are you all's suggestions Btw i am 5'7 175
i'm a bit fan of larger rears in quads...my go-to rear fins are the k2.1 quad rears. i'm too big for the k2.1 fin in general (i'm 6'1" & 190lbs), but the rears work really well for me. have you tried the m-5/pg-5/pc-5 fin? i think that would be a really good option as well for you. if you could find a pair of the k2.1 quad rears & pair them up w/ pg-5 front fins, i think you'd have a really good quad set up. i'm not a fan of the gx-q...i think it's too small & doesn't provide enough drive or hold. but that may be b/c i'm a bigger guy. so a pc-5 quad set might work well for you also. my other suggestion would be to try your board as a twin+trailer. if you can get your hands on a set of the mr-tfx fins, you might be blown away. that has to be one of my favorite all-time fin set ups.
I'm pretty sure the Nugget quad fin placement is out on the rail. If yours is, I like the all four fins to be very close in size and template. Depending on your weight, I'd go with something like the pc-5 fins, as njsurfer42 suggested. The TCs are really drivey fins. If you're looking for something looser, try the pc-5s, which are really good, standard, all-around fins that are lightweight and have excellent flex characteristics. I run Rainbow's R4 fins fronts and rears in my rail quad. They have a 4.25 in. base and give me plenty of drive and I'm 195lbs. If you do go with the same size front and back, you can go with slightly shorter base fins than you might go with as a thruster. If you go with different sized fins, bigger fins in the back will give you more drive, but it seems you're looking for something more responsive. In that case, I'd go with slightly bigger fins up front than in the back. Your typical thruster sized fins up front, and slightly smaller in the rears.
thanks for the help guys i think i am going to invest in a set of pc-5 quads when I get some spare cash. as of now im going to switch back to my k3 quad, k3 in the front and sf4 for my rear fins until i get the pc-5s
