Im surprised nobody mentioned Red Hot Chili Peppers .. I am a huge fan of anything before One Hot Minute inclusive ... after that they kinda lost their funky ways ... seen them a bunch of times and they only played newer not so impressive tunes
Saw them twice at a small club in Syracuse, NY in 1984 or and 1985. 1st show maybe 200 fans. 1985, 500 fans. This was right before Mother's Milk broke big. Got to split a pitcher of beer and talk music with Anthony and Flea. Also met there 1985 warm-up band Faith No More (who at the time I thought was just some punks trying to steal my glorious moment of rubbing elbows with "The Peppers.")
Lagwagon: Hoss and Frank Black: Teenager of the year these two albums stronlgy reflect my musical taste but I like so many different things even classical, opera, old country/western, folk ballads- I found when you get older and/or lose your folks you start to like the music they listened to for sentilmental reasons perhaps.
I listen to all kinds of music, just depends on the situation. I grew up playing in "punk" bands and sort of moved into a decent part-time career as a DJ through college and a few years afterward spinning predominantly Drum and Bass and Big Beat (DJ Shadow-style hip hop). I got into electronic music production as well, was even signed by a label out of the UK called CIA for a little while. That said, I love true underground hip hop, I still buy vinyl and I still have my turntables to mess around on when I'm bored. Anyway, here is a short list in various genres: -Reggae/OG Ska: Peter Tosh, eek a mouse, Desmond Dekker, Skatalites, Steel Pulse -Country/Bluegrass: Hank Sr. and Jr, Willie, Johnny, Old Crow Medicine Show, Chatham County Line, Deer Tick -Metal: Man Is The Bastard, Damad, Antischism, Cradle of Filth, Assuck -"Punk": Hot Water Music, Fugazi, Small Brown Bike, Jawbreaker, Gang of Four, Trans Am -"Classic": The Kinks, Credence, The Band, Talking Heads, New Order, B52's -Hip Hop/Turntablist: DJ Shadow, RJD2, Quasimoto, Mr. Lif, Blackalicious, Tribe, De La Soul, Leaders of the New School, EL-P, Aesop Rock -DnB: Calibre, MIST, Total Science, London Electricity, Mathematics, Roni Size, Digital, Ronin I don't really get the surfing scene's fascination with Dub Step. It always struck me as a fall back for people who could not keep up with Drum and Bass, to me it takes no skill to produce or spin. Fun fact: Many of the "prominent" Dub Step producers are actually very well known DnB producers under pseudonyms.
hole, mudhoney, zeppelin, garbage, iggy pop, ramones, misfits, pink floyd, pearl jam, nirvana of course.....many more.
Wow. Where I'm from 2 bands that resonate surf are black flag and pennywise Hermosa representin' socal! WESTSIDE! Oh yeah and Sublime reppin the LBC/ the OC(only caucasion)
Clapton, Allman Bro, John Prine, Joan Osborne, Eagles, early Steve Miller, Travelling Willburys- If you have never heard of John Prine- Look up Sam Stone, Hello in There or Paradise. Does his own music- attracks old hippies (like me). Joan Osborne in my opinion, is the best female vocolist of our day. Not a glamor girl- sticks to music & can do anything. Look up; "Crazy Baby". For you Dead fans, she toured with them after Garcia dies & sang lead.
if you like good music, check out these guys, local coming out of oceanport, house band at the stone pony, show this Friday at the Stone Pony. Nice reggae/rock vibes and they can rock to funk/alternative and throw in some jazz to spice it up http://www.facebook.com/pages/Loose-Fit/107515749269774
