Hey all- I'm on my way to Rincon next week and I'm looking for a little advice on what board to bring. I have both a 7'6 Walden Mini-Magic and a 6'2 rocket quad and I'm not quite sure which one (or both) to bring. Yes the Walden is an epoxy and the rocket is not so durability is in favor of the Walden but at 7'6 it might be annoying to travel with considering my wife is coming too. I'm not a great surfer and probably not gonna paddle out if it gets bigger than 2' OH. I'll be spending my time in the water at whatever beach break is looking most fun. You won't find me ripping DOH indicators. Do i bring the rocket and rent a LB if i have to or do I bring the walden and deal with it? Or, **** it all, bring them both and hope no one checks my bag at the check in counter? I'm not in love with bringing both boards as I'm not likely to leave one unattended on the beach or car while in the water with the other. Any suggestions? thanks bill
if youre gonna be in rincon this thursday and friday bring neither and rent a step-up or something cuz its gonna be pumping. dont know what the forecast is gonna be like after that but you could leave both at home and rent from mar azul surf shop. bobby will help you pick out a board and has a good selection. here's his site. there are directions somewhere on there http://www.puertoricosurfinginfo.com/
I always try to travel light - and only bring one board- although most people would say otherwise. If your going just to surf- maybe bring both, but if you'll be spending time with your wife and maybe surfing once a day, just bring one. I would always bring the board I'm most comfortable riding in any given situation. Sometimes that has been a bigger board to handle a variety of waves. I once took only a longboard to PR and had a great time! Surfed DOH wildos on the last day! Bill- if your just learning and not looking to ride big waves- bring the 7'6, you will be able to paddle into the waves easier... although I'm sure the quad would be fun too... it really depends on what your most comfortable riding 2ft waves on and 7ft...
I'll be renting his private Villa in late Oct. for my honeymoon, boards included! This is my 1st trip to PR, think I made the right choice with the location? He seemed pretty legit on the phone and was very helpful.
+1 on this if you bring one at all. As others have said, renting isn't a bad way to go if you'll not be surfing the whole time.
Thanks for the advice. I called Mar Azul and the guy was super helpful. He's holding a 7'10 CI Waterhog for me. Ironic as that is the board I was looking at when I bought my Walden! He said I could switch it up with other boards as the week goes, too. Definitely the right call. Thanks again
Sounds like it, and i'm glad so many people have good things to say, I was real conflicted with staying at the resort vs. staying in his villa, but now I can't wait till October!
I rented from Bobby and I probably rode 4 different boards in 8 days. It is great to be able to switch out based on the conditions. My buddy down there loves this time of year because it is less crowded and still some swell. Have a great trip
Definitely a wise move! I brought a board with me to PR back in 1999. It was a beautiful Frierson 7'2" Rocket Fish before the baggage handlers put a massive pressure ding in the nose. I have always rented boards when I travel ever since! Have a great time!!
