How Flat is Summer in East Florida ?

Florida has the most shark attacks followed closely by Horry & Georgetown county South Carolina- it doesn't take a statistician to realize this is a function of the amount of people who are in the water being highest in these two areas combined with the presence of sharks. You have to have both for an attack to be likely: more people or more sharks increases the probability; more people and more sharks does so even more.

Marine biologists say the species that has probobly eaten the most people is the Oceanic Whitetip because throughout history when there has been an accident at sea which resulted in people ending up in the water it's the Whitetips that show up to eat.

All this being said I'm more concerned about me or my loved ones being mauled or killed by the "sweet, loving and misunderstood" Pitbulls that every clown feels they must own nowadays.

 

This is simply not true. Look at the amount of people in water in southern california and the fact there hasn't been an attack in L.A. county for about 50 years vs over 200 attacks in one county alone in Florida(volusia). It's the amount of sharks in the water. Period. Area's near new smyrna especially are INFESTED with sharks.
Ever seen the amount of people in the water in the summer in the jersey shore or long island area's? Again there's almost never an attack. Now look at florida during the same months.

They seriously need to do some black tip/bull shark fishing to lower the population of sharks in florida, thereby greatly reducing risk to people.

 

You should be happy with the surf in FL if you have been landlocked previously.

heres a great lik to put all of the shark attacks in florida into perspective. I for one notice there aren't a lot of fatalities, but I would like to see what th injuries were. Loosing a leg or arm might as well be chalked up as fatal in my book. Thats a LIFE CHANGING event,

I just moved here a little ove a week ago from upstate ny, this is where people call lakes beaches, beachs, and I laugh. I grew up in LA so I know what a beach is. I have been to the beach 4 times and the first two were disappointing surf wise. Then for some reason last friday or saturday, man the waves went from flat to 3-4 feet. I was asking locals and they were talking about some winds off of africa blha blah blah. All I know is I got some KILLER body surfing in. I dont own a surfboard yet but will probably be buying a bodyboard before fall/winter starts. I already bought my beach tent for long days when I need shade or privacy

 

NSB / Ponce Inlet almost always has a rideable wave, and when the hurricanes hit they hold the swell really well compared to other spots that turn into closeout city. Sure there are sharks in the area, but they are everywhere, don't kid yourself, and the 99.9% of the bites in this area are from smaller sharks and end up in nothing more than some stiches, some more sever than others, i'm not even sure when the last recorded fatality was, if ever, but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen to you, cause it could, but it's really no different than anywhere else i've surfed, it's more hype than anything

edit: Just to give you example, today is July 24th and by all definition, it is the "flat" season and there shouldn't be much going on but there is a 2-4 semi-glassy / glassy wave in the water and looks like lots of fun, and there isn't a hurricane in sight.... look further down the coast and it's not near as good (looks fun in Cocoa too)

 

Southern Cali is not sharky. It's only once you get into the red triangle(central cali) that you get into big adult great white white territory.

 

It's rideable today in Northeast Florida. I'll try to hit it later this afternoon. So far this summer has been decent

Ich bin auch Deutscher und ich wohne im East Coast Florida im Indialantic Gegend. Schau den swellreport an und du kannst sehen das es nicht sehr gut jetzt ist. Aber Sommer zeit ist die beste zeit für wellen dank die großen Hurrikan stürmen. Manchmal kriegen wir drei oder fünf großen stürmen mit wellen so riesig wie 2.5 Metern.
To those who don't know German I basically said that we can get really big swell in the summer thanks to the occasional Hurricane.
And screw the sharks, who cares. I can't go around being afraid of everything. Am I supposed to be scared of getting in a wreck when I get in my car? No, but I am careful on the road. So when I surf I don't care about sharks unless I see one.

 

fun today at mayport. +1 Some weeks flat. Some weeks a surprising amount of rideable and ripable days. Quality? Not that good but fun is what you make it. Get a kayak, SUP, fishing pole, shape, or shoot stuff and you won't mind the week on week off nature of summer time surf. Also have a diverse quiver from Longboard... a Simmons/crap wave retro fish, small wave shorty of your choosing, a performance board, to a step up. Granted I have lived here 2 months and have yet to use the last two mentioned yet, I'm sure once the juice hits for real they'll get their share of use....
