    Hey,

I noticed some of you guys are getting some really good high res photos. I am looking to get a camera soon. Just wondering what some of you guys have been using. Camera/lens.

I am looking into getting the Canon SLR Rebel XSI w/ 18mm-55mm. Good choice? I plan on getting a better lens sometime in the future. Just wanna know what some of you guys are using.

    Thanks!

    Read what I PM'd you.

I have a Nikon D40x 18-55, 55-200, 70-300mm lenses. Saving money for new equipment is tough when you need a car.

Everyone should check out the Flip camera. It is an iPod sized video camera and they make water housing for it. The camera and housing are $150 total and the video isn't pretty nice.

No disrespect but this thread was created by me to get info on what kind of cameras and lenses you guys are using......not were to get a waterproof housing..:) I don't mind if others have questions as well but lets at least stick to the topic.

So what are you guys using, what's your favorite, and why? Canon, Nikon....ect.

I would say 99% of the great shots you see are on Cannon or Nikon. From there it is really on what you are looking to spend on a DSLR.

    Chris,

Yeah, I know most are Canon or Nikon.....was trying to figure out which models and why....likes...dislikes...ect.

I have about $1000 to play with. I will be using it for mostly still shots that need to be in high res. and some water sports shots.

    Pentax K10D
primary reason for purchase- owned a Pentax SLR for years and the lenses are interchangeable and I figured the switch to digital would be simpler with something I was already familiar with
Haven't done a lot with it at the beach yet -the one day I tried to shoot the fog was thicker than pea soup.

I have some more photos here.

Asking for camera recommendations is generally guaranteed to start a Nikon vs. Canon war. They are both great cameras.

My suggestion is to invest more heavily on lenses than a camera body. Lenses last forever and they are really the key to taking good photos. A quality lens on a mediocre body always beats a mediocre lens on a quality body.

You can PM me if you want to chat more specifically.

Most people I know shoot with Canon. I have several friends that use the EOS 30D and that is close to in your range. I am actually looking at something along these lines as well. I picked up a Canon HV20 HD cam last year before Costa Rica and was really impressed. Of course the body of the 30D is only the begining of the costs and the addiction to shooting that will follow.

I shoot mostly with a canon 5d sigma 70-200mm f2.8 and slap on a doubler (turns it into a 240-400mm f5.6). Unfortunately there is degradation with the doubler when you blow the image up. If i can get my hands on my dad's canon300mm f4 i'll use that as well. If you get a 'faster' lense, i highly recommend investing in a monopod (faster lenses are usually heavier), which will help with the clarity of your shots.

The 5d is a full frame sensor and shoots around 3fps. with a grand see if you can get a used 20D or maybe a 40D. As far as lenses, canon makes some of the best. In the aftermarket I've seen great shots with sigma and tamron. bandhphotovideo.com will have some used as will keh.com and http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/

The rebel is an entry level camera so you'll be limited on features etc.

Nikon FTW  I prefer their lenses which is why I purchased their SLR. I own a 18-55mm 55-200mm and 70-300mm all Nikkors. They are all realllly nice and fast. As for the camera, it is an entry level SLR. D40x. It has a lot of features, but not nearly top of the line.

As for Sigma and Tamron, don't purchase those. Stick to Canon/Nikon lenses. Quality is more important than price. I can only see purchasing one of those if you want to go big say like 500mm cause it'll be like $5000 cheaper.

Agua - 40D is the way to start. Good lens with fast FPS. Canon = top quality. Good choice :)
