i have been looking for a small wave board and Like the proctor rascal II and the CI neck beard. what do you guys think about these boards and is there any other board you would recomend.
if u can afford channel islands boards,u dont want anything else.those boards are the best and anything else is downgrading.
and that's why a lot of pro's also surf ...lost and Firewire boards. Seems like you've been brainwashed.
or you could always get a board custom made for your exact specification... but that may just be the crazy in me speaking.
CI and other big names like JS are expensive but they sell for such stupid money even after you've used the hell out them it makes up for the initial cost. Ever since Burton got involved it seems like they just keep coming up with more and more ridiculous gadget shapes with dopey names. I know they have a new tail option on the Neck Beard now b/c the tail was sawed straight off and a new hideous shape called the Sperm Whale that looks like an OB tampon. If I went on the CI website and saw "the all new Dayne Reynold Anal Bead model" I wouldn't be a bit surprised. Hipsters....

Dude you're so core. Take a step back and think about the business model. Big companies like CI, Rusty and JS need to have a lot of models because they make boards internationally. There's not local guy that a surfer can go to. In their eyes more variety makes up for that. Hopefully as a surfer you can find something that might resemble what you'd order in their models. It doesn't matter anyway because most surfers ride what the pros ride. There are select groups that ride alt shapes like Bonzers, mini-Simms, pills, etc but they are very select. Ever see an average joe on a shapers website riding their boards? No, you only see pros ripping so you can say "hey that could be me" and you buy it. As for the names, I agree with you. Surfers are retarded. Why do you think one of the most world class waves is called "Macaronis"? Enjoy your custom based off a Flyer.
This. It's so cool to hate on CI but most of the models you're riding are based on Merrick's shapes. Walk into a shop and ask someone about a short and fat small wave board. He'll say... "It's kind of like a dumpster diver."
I think you missed my point completely. I said if a CI will end up costing you the same overall as a lesser known custom even though they cost a more initially because they bring so much money second hand. I had a few and my M4 was the best surfing I ever did. After their was no life left in it I still sold it for over $200 and haven't been able to find anything I surf as well since. I visited the factory in Carpenteria and Al took a break from shaping to ask us how we liked the boards and talk for a few just because we were there all way from the Carolinas. That made an impression on me. Has he made some of the most influencial board designs of modern times? yes, absolutely. I also heard people talking **** at places like the lighthouse because if you're on a CI you can't surf it good enough for some people unless you're KS himself- those are the ones who think "they're so core". What I'm amused by is the constant flow of new (sometimes awful & rarely great but mostly short lived) shapes with a pro's "shaping input" and a quirky name attached. It's a good business model: keep offering new, different products, market them with your star talent and watch the hoards race at breakneck speed to be the first to have one regardless of whether the design has any merit or not. The CI product line has tripled. Some of the best designs are now only available as customs while the new, unproven models just keep coming. That's business though- make what the public will buy for the most money not neccessarily what's best for them- in fact if you can keep them buying one after another hoping the next one does the trick that's even better. What other people want to spend their money on is their choice. I'm a capitalist so good for Al and Burton's shareholders but I thinks it's gimmicky but what isn't. I'll wait it out and see which trends make a contribution to the functionality of what I ride: small to medium size wave oriented shortboards and a step-up that doesn't get used enough.
