so i have been an artist as long as i can remember. naturally when i get a new board or anything like that i see it as a blank canvas and cant help but doodle or paint on it. over the years i have come up with some pretty sick looking boards. i constantly have people saying that i should do other peoples boards or whatever for some side cash. my question is this. is there actually any market for this kinda stuff? i never really thought so but i would figure id give it a shot and see if its even worth pursuing. personally i think no but i figured id see what everyone else thought.
Pursuing Art in any fashion is a *****. Some days you cant give it away, other days you cant paint enough. Are there custom paint jobs at your local shop? The content of your art will help find you a buyer.
As H20 said, it is such a variable market, is it possible yes, look at Drew Brophy, and their are a few other select few out there who have made a name for themselves. But just from my experience people want to do the art themselves, yes some people like crazy resin work and airbrush work, but i have seen a lot of people doing their own artwork, it makes the board more personal. just my .02
I agree with you completely. i wouldnt let anyone esle do anything on one of my boards. i just constantly get people (usually non-surfers) telling me to persue it. thanks for the input
The guy who taught me how to surf (errr, meaning told me the things I need to know then let me use his home and board for months on end) is an artist too. He has a business print lams for boards. You can have a lam of ANY art work you did, printed and sell that to board makers. This is the lam he and I designed for my board. Side note: Black is awful in FLA summer...my wax melts to quick. He tried to tell me but I didn't listen. Anyway, if you want his 411 I can get that to you.
I worked in shops that hire outside artist to contract work. Check local board builders to see if they are interested. I do all mine myself personally but I also do all my processes myself by choice. Only a few times have I had guys order boards clear so they can play. Alot of the big names are doing computer graphic laminates. Just like everything else, you gotta get a portfolio together and hit the streets.If your heart is there Definately pursue.
thanks for all the responses. im just beginning to get into the early stages of maybe throwing something together and i just wanted to test the waters a little and get some outside opinions. thanks for the advice
