So my cousin is getting married 4 of July weekend. The wedding is in the Barbados. I never talk to my family here, but maybe I can make a surf trip out of it. Is there even surf in the Barbados? Has anyone been?
that settles it. Ill talk to my family and go for a free vacation. the wedding is here: http://www.cobblerscove.com
nice. I called the hotel above to make the reservation. Free trip, just gotta deal with family i hate. all good though. ill be back in Kauai in december to see family i like.
July is probably the WORST month for waved in 'Dos unless you get an errant hurricane that takes a Southerly dip as it comes of the African coast. But there's plenty to do other than surfing as well. I have to ask.... You really wanted to know if there are ANY waves in 'Dos? Ke11y lists Soup Bowl in his top 5 waves.....
With the tradewinds there, the south coast is almost always rideable with something. As said above, July isn't the best month, but you can find waves somewhere. It's a small island, you can drive around the whole thing in about 3 hours. Rent a car and find some surf! Soup Bowl has waves a lot, but conditions are almost always subpar because of the trades. I was in Barbados in Feb and there were waves in the chest-head range every day on the south coast. Soup Bowl was big and nasty...I wasn't messing with it.
Is there surf in Barbados? Do Bear's **** in the woods? Heck ya, there is surf... Its best in the winter or later in the summer, when the tropics are firing, but either way Barbados is a small island with huge exposure to swells from the NW, N, NE, E, SE, and S. Bring a board, or plan on renting a board, as you will definitely find waves in Barbados.
just never really considered traveling to Barbados to surf, so never really thought about it. Usually just go home to Kauai. Now this hotel is in Speightstown , looks like the surf is in or around bathsheba. the hotel is about 7 miles away to that spot. Not too bad. Rent a car and get it done. The hotel / airfare is paid for, so this is a free trip. Will bring my 6'5 thumbtail and 6'1.
Does anyone else recall hearing about Slater breaking a half dozen boards in one session at Soupbowls?
Don't be surprised if that 7 mile trip takes you as much as an hour. It's all country roads and you pretty much can plan on getting lost at some point.
Ok Ill rent an SUV . Im still debating what boards to bring. 6'5 thumbtail is my go to travel board with the AM-1 fins, but should I bring a 6'2 quad or 6'1 tri? 6'1 tri is a comp board.
There is surf on every edge of that rock. South side, west side, NE (bathsheeba) side. July will be a total crap shoot. It could be a lake, could be head high and you wont know which until a couple days out so dont bother picking which board yet.
You don't necessarily need an SUV. Nearly all the roads are paved. They are narrow and not well marked though, so you will definitely get lost. I would guess the drive from Speightstown would be around 40ish minutes without any traffic. There is surf around there too, but it's rare in the summer. You need a solid north swell to get that side of the island pumping.
Caught so many waves there and at 30+ breaks. As long as you are willing to drive, it is rare that the island truly unrideable on one of the coasts.
Parlors is mushburgers, Soup Bowl always breaks better. Parlors is good if you are scared of hitting a reef and can't handle the current of the reef pass. I've taken plenty of lefts off the point at Soup Bowl into Parlors, though. It's a sick shallow ledge that breaks great when the swell is more out of the East. Sand Bank, to the North of Bathsheba in the park can be awesome when the swell is peaky. South Point is popular and breaks awesome at low tide when it's chest + and the waves are out of the right direction (I don't know what exactly)--the wave will just bend down the reef throwing crazy barrels. The reef is pretty much flat dead coral there, I stand up all the time with no problems. If there is swell coming from the Northeast and it's 7'+ go to Duppies. It's not all that easy to find and the walk to the break is steep. The currents can get crazy and the access is a tiny piece of beach amongst 200' tall cliffs. BUT, this place can get seriously all time and holds huge swell. Speightstown is good for accessing the West Coast spots, there's a lot of fire coral over there but well worth it when it's pumping. As far as rentals, rent a van. Don't mess with an SUV, a lot of places there are too tight to turn a Tahoe around and you'll be scraping mirrors in traffic. The vans hold a ton of stuff and you can get ones with AWD. Have fun....
i called the hotel and all watersports are included with the hotel rate. This includes sailing, snorkeling, watersking, etc. The wedding concierge said that an employee at the hotel is a good surfer and takes people out for a $20 tip. that is a good thing. ready to get at it.
