Hey guys, I'm new at interpreting the surf forecast, but looks like thurs-sat are going to be some decent waves. Does the fact that its choppy make that much of a difference?
Depends on the direction and the wind speed. I would say most likely it's going to be blown out unless the wind shifts north or south a bit, and lightens up.
Hoping it's big and choppy enough to make it memorable! Not holding my breath though. Far out predictions rarely seem to be accurate (last week)...
Don't always go by the colors and "choppy" forecast. Sure at a certain wind mph you can be assured it'll be blown out, but the red, blue and green are dictated by a certain range. Once it goes over the assigned mph, which could only be one mph, it'll change colors. Learn the area where you surf and what it does during certain conditions. I try and keep a log of swell direction, period, height, wind direction, speed, etc, so I can ball park what the ocean will be like. Scored a solid clean 6'+ day with a friend at a very popular NJ inlet, without a soul around because the forecast called for "choppy" conditions. Guaranteed if the forecast was green, everyone and their mother would have been there. Knowledge is key, be smarter than the forecast machine.
Be ready for June/July/early Aug flat spells they are the worst. Don't blow all your money at the bars.
WED at dawn may be ok in the mid Atlantic at least for a lb. Better than fighting relenltess NE white water anyway.
I remember that day.. We didn't go out cause there was a 15ft Bull shark out there circling the pier. We thought you knew.....
So anyone in the water @ OCMD this AM? My week has turned to hell because of work (was up until 4 AM this AM). I'm betting it was pretty nice around 6-6:30 AM. Please torture me.
