I'm from the East Coast and looking for a good surf school in the San Diego area. My trip will be sometime in July. Have body boarded and snowboarded for years - but total novice to surfing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

How long are you going to be there?

Long time ago, maybe 15 years ago, I used this guy, I still see him there, he runs a good operation and is a great guy. You can do group or private lessons and Beacons, where he teaches is a great beginner spot, it's a bit north of downtown, on the north side of Encinitas. http://www.kahunabob.com/

Whatever you do, do NOT attend the Ocean Beach surf camps. Sharky waters.... sketchy people....

Seriously though, your best bet is a North PB class or up at La Jolla Shores in the summer. Scripps and the shores get decent, but playful.... same with PB.... straight up...

I know a bunch of guys that run the Ocean Experience camp, and they are the most respectful and knowledgeable ones around... they will make sure you dont get eaten by angry locals...

If I were you I'd buy a board on Craigslist and surf as much as possible. Scripps is good, but if you're brushing up on surfing starting on La Jolla shores is a good idea. Trail 4 at Sano state beach is pretty cool, but the plant is right there...

    Enjoy!
