Okay, lets here your thoughts on how to pass the time during the summer doldrums? There are always some brutal flat spells in July and August, so how do you cope? For me personally, I see a therapist, and also try to remind myself that September and October are just around the corner.
I try paddling to keep the arms ready, but it's boring... snorkeling, fishing, mowing and weedeating, zzzzzzzzzz It's gonna be a long, flat summer. Therapy seems like a good idea, is it expensive?
catch up on my reading list, train on my paddleboard (prone, not SUP), hang out w/ my fiancee, wheel or wrench on my jeep...
build boards do home repairs I put off all fall, winter and spring swim snorkel if it's clear fish at dawn and/or dusk push the ankle biters into ankle slappers on the log go out for ice cream grill anything and everything tend the garden cold beers or get creative with blender drinks or mojitos
I surf behind the boat! Wakeboarding / wake skating / skurfing is a blast. adult rec softball is also a surprisingly good time, join a team it's like being a kid again. I get to go out on a racing sail boat (J-boat) some afternoons with the boss. Beers, cookouts, reading the "bongs" thread... Whatever it takes.
When the surf is flat, I take the sailboat out. Hanging out on the beach is never a bad idea. Every now and then, a little longboard bump will come in. Can't wait for fall - hurricane season.
I've just started doing ocean swimming... A great way to take advantage of a calm ocean and a good way to get in shape and ready for the hurricane and fall swells. I do, however, feel pretty naked out there without a board in the murky water.
This morning, my girlfriend and I were talking about looking into SUP boards for flat spells. I know some (a lot) are not down with SUP use; however, I want to use a stand up for the workout - everyone I talk to say that stand up is a great core workout. Thoughts?
Right now I'm making a custom cutting board, starting a queen size bed frame with a locker at the foot (black walnut, tiger maple and possibly some sapele accents with a walnut/maple laminated and carved medallion in the headboard), drawing up some plans for a tunnel hull flats skiff I will probably never get around to building and cursing at the dry hay that used to be my green lawn. I have also been doing my normal regimen of fishing, gigging and spear fishing, although not as much as I would like. This of course aside from the normal work except my business is slow in the summer = extra boredom.
hit the beach and daydream about being 3 inches tall catching double over ankle waves...diving, swimming in the pool, bbq-ing, really though, down here the sun and humidity are so bad that a/c is not a bad idea either...lol
I agree - Yesterday, I almost got cut off by a phantom SUP board; first-timers need to wear their leashes. I just want to paddle around the harbor and the river. Trying to get my swole on.
ive been catching stray thigh-waist high waves the past 5 days. its like a 30 minute wait but its worth it. besides that teaching some ladies to surf paddling and some cold ones
Anything in the water is good by me... And on a flat day, I'd say its a perfect reason to get in the water and get a workout. I can't believe how popular they have become and so quickly. As other's said, its different if you paddle into a lineup...
Mountain biking trails or road biking with my all-mountain/DH bike (it's quite a workout...) Reading books. Watch surf movies...maybe an occasional non-surf movie. BBQ'ing, definitely. -Charcoal of course. Cutting the lawn/trimming hedges.
My wife and I were also looking into SUPs for flat days, I would never consider actually trying to surf one of those tanks but it would be cool to just paddle around. They are so damn expensive though, I can't seem to justify spending that much on one. Kayaks are so much cheaper and just as fun I would think. I've been skating local concrete parks a lot this summer. Super fun skating the bowls, pretty good cross training for surfing too. Although, it's been way to hot lately. After about an hour of pumping around the bowl I'm beat and drenched in sweat.
+1Did that yesterday. At the tip of a jetty I could clearly see the bottom.Got some pretty cool shots with my water proof Pentex.
Don't got much time off work, but I've been doing tons of kitesurfing and a little bit of snorkeling. If I had the time would definitely try to rent a boat once a week to do some wakeboarding, fishing right before sundown, and some bikeriding for exercise
