hey guys while surfing today i landed on the back of my fin with my calf. it hurts pretty bad and its tough to walk. anybody hav an idea of what it is? i know this is vague but i cant go to th doctor and no one i know takes any injury serious or cares enough to help
Ice it and keep it elevated then see how it feels tomorrow. It's probably going to hurt in the morning so try to it stretch a little bit if you can, but don't over work it. If its still really bad after a few days of rest you'll probably want to see a doctor. And I know the guy above me was joking but please don't take any pain killers other than NSAIDs (tylenol, advil, etc.)
Most likely damaged the muscle. I've had similar things happen, and you could end up with a lump under your skin for a very long time... feels like a piece of rope in there. Actually, it's scar tissue. But it will stop hurting eventually and you'll be back in the water in no time. My doctor told me ice, elevation, and even an ace bandage are good for the first day or two. After that, mild stretching a few times a day, and light work on the muscle is best... like normal walking. Nothing more. The reason for this is when a muscle heals itself, it needs to re-create the fibers (both muscle and scar fibers) in the orientation of the rest of the muscle. If you immobilize it completely, the fibers will just heal randomly, and it will take longer for them to strengthen in the orientation that's needed.
Sounds like you bruised your muscle. Take LBCrew's advice. Whatever you do, don't over-work it! A bruised muscle can tear very easily--then you have a REAL problem on your hands. Light stretching and walking....
