OK, so I am looking at a used board where the nose was broken off about 6 inches and was repaired professionally. Will it just break off again and have to be repaired? Can a break like this be repaired and it will last or is that just wishful thinking? Thanks, Dean
I repaired correctly, you'll be fine. I broke a nose 10 years ago and it's never been a problem. Anything more than the first 12 inches I would be concerned, or at least get it for dirt cheap.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it depends on whether or not the stringer has been reinforced. If the stringer hasn't been reinforced then the board will be much weaker at the break point and will be far more likely to break again. I'm sure there are some folks out there that will tell you differently, but every board I've ever bought with a broken nose that has been "professionally repaired" broke again in the same spot.
it depends on the repair. I had a board that the nose broke once, then my friend broke the nose again, but in a different spot. So that leads me to believe that the previous break that was repaired was stronger than the rest of the board. both breaks were in the first 6 inches of the board (the perfection i have for sale).
So far everybody's right. If you reinforce the stringer its stronger but likely adds weight which you don't want to do in the nose of the board for obvious reason. You want a repair that far forward to be light. But there not much concern for a broken nose at 6". It might break agin if you plow it into something but if if hits that hard it was gonna break anyway. The main thing is that the repair is water tigt with no signs of leaks-yellowing or salt formation after the board dries showing evaporation from a crack. I would buy it if it looks like a fun board.
