im in the opposite situation as you turds. im in va beach and may transfer for a higher paying job in san diego...having trouble deciding with a gf of 5 years who isnt 100% on the idea
Best of luck with that. I personally am no a huge fan of SoCal, but I can see why most people love it. Is the gf from Hampton Roads originally? I have noticed that most of the "born and raised" folks are generally weary of moving away from the area. Personally, I couldn't leave VA Beach soon enough! It's funny how, as much as I hated surfing the inlet OVER AND OVER, I would kill to go get some waves there these days.
I know a few people who have moved out there recently for various reasons and they love it. They don't surf, but they love the area, i'm sure you GF would too. Now as far as surf goes, the choice is obvious.
shes from jersey originally. my base salary would be $42k plus overtime and shift differential. shes more worried about leaving her family so far behind (still has the 5 hour drive safety net here). i just think there is more potential out there. i have a degree in criminal justice/work for the govt. and she has one in public relations/currently doing a sales job. i mean honestly she really doesnt see them that often...maybe 3 times this past year since we have moved down here. we shall see if i get the offer.
Man, you may want to look into cost of living indices and compare that with your projected net income. $42k sounds a little tight for SoCal, even in both your salaries combined are closer to $100k. Don't forget significantly higher state taxes as well. I just hate seeing people make moves for "more pay" that actually end up hurting their bottom line. To the OP: a carpool is a great idea. I would surely be looking for folks to carpool with if I was in your situation and I hope you find some. As far as the argument regarding who lives in what proximity to the beach, blah, blah, blah: I live 15 minutes from WB and CB and haven't surfed once since I got back from surfing the Lesley swell in PR. Been busy as all get-out between work, projects around the house and a ton of orders for custom woodworking thingymehbobbers from my "hobby" wood shop that is more like a full-fledged part-time job at the moment. Of course, the lack of a decent swell has made it a little easier to not over-think it--lest I go insane. Anyway, what I'm saying is that sometimes it doesn't really matter how far away you live.... Live Aloha: Wishing you and your wife and your soon to be child a healthy delivery. I don't have kids but I can imagine how stressful that situation can be.
I just moved from DC to Seattle about a year ago and it has been an awesome journey. The 5/4 I used to use for the mid-atlantic is way too hot to use here. The travel time is about the same as DC-IRI, but the waves...the waves are so much better. Pacific power with lots of water moving around. When it's macking in the winter and you don't feel like dealing with 15-20 foot faces, it is all about the the Straits, and with just a handful of guys. There are some core guys that truly rip out here too. Wanna change it up and hit the slopes, then bring your snorkel....it can get super deep. Any resort out here blows Whitetail, Poconos, Wisp, 7 Springs, and Snowshoe combined out of the water. Once you get here, assuming you'll settle in Seattle, PM me and we'll hit it up. Best move I have ever done!
Best thing about being a surfer in DC is Dulles. Learn it, Use it, live it. Originally Posted by DawnPatrolSUP Never understood this mentality, either you love surfing or you don't. Wait til Dawn Patrol is in PR for his honeymoon. The one swell he gets will come at the same time as when his new bride wants to have some quality time.... You jinxed yourself gringo...
HAHA, yeah it would be my luck huh? Only my soon to be wife is the one who booked this trip and is totally on board. We'll be there for an entire week, and she knows out of that I'll be surfing at least 3, maybe 4 of those mornings / afternoons. No issues here "gringo", and there will still be plenty of "quality time", I don't plan on surfing ALL day every day, just some of it. It's all about setting expectations and compromise, something we seem to do well with when it comes to these things, hence why we are getting married (amongst many other reasons), and she's a big reason i'm able to get in the water so much.
tommyh, you rock, man...thanks again for all the helpful info on my CR trip a couple years ago. Hope you get back close to the ocean someday.. Good luck in all your future endeavors.
sounds plausible...and to who said about expenses. Also, with the ot and sd it would come out just above 50k. I'm just looking to rent too, not buy a house. worse comes to worse i could get a part time job. My sister lives in OC, I'll get the full scoop.
Kid Rock- Damn glad to see you posting today. I saw a couple of your brothers went down - was hoping it wasn't you. Did you ever decide where to take the wife for her birthday? Jimi
