Hey all I just was thinking a lot of surfing communities get bad reps for being "aggro". I find most people are cool and very helpful as I was learning and even now as I'm getting more interested in shaping other shapers that I never met before and they all have been awesome by letting me put my blank order on theirs to save me 140 plus shipping everytime. I've also been lucky enough to talk to one who when I first started let me watch him shape and coached me through my first all at no profit to them so I'm glad in my 18 years of life yes I'm young I've been lucky to meet such great people! Great attitudes like that are the reason i got hooked on surfing and now shaping just ordered 4 more blanks and I'd sure like to order more before this winter is over! Random post I know rip me if you want.. just saying those who help always seem happier in the water.
i find that it's a fine line between "getting ripped" & someone reaching out a helping hand & a lot of that has to do w/ the attitude & mindset, real or perceived, of the person doing the asking. if you're humble, gracious, & don't act like a self-entitled, spoiled brat, then people will be willing to go the extra mile & help you out. if you act as though the world owes you, then you're not going to be treated as well. there's a great tradition of learning & mentoring in surf culture, but it also involves paying your dues. if you want to learn to shape, or start a label, & are willing to put the time in doing other things like sweeping, sanding, etc...then most shapers will give you the opportunity to try your hand. if you come at it from the other end, then people are going to be turned off.
Im only 16 but this summer I met 90% nice surfers and 10% arrogant a$$holes. A lot of guys will talk to you while your out there while other guys are going hard dropping in on guys and calling every wave. Maybe its because i only surf in LBI NJ but thats just me
Yeah like I said I've always been polite. I just find if your nice and don't act like an ass others will be nice and glad to help. I guess I just have met nice people and I'm happy I have. I'm grateful and hope one day I can return some favors to a few
42... well put. I'd also add to that... take your time, and learn. It's very tempting to put yourself out there as a "shaper" after building a handful of boards, and start taking orders before you're ready. Go at it slowly... have fun... take your time and get things right. Build boards for you and your friends. Try different designs and techniques, and learn from each one. Spend time with experienced shapers, glassers, fin guys, sanders and polishers if you can. Show your ability to learn, take criticism, work hard, and demonstrate high standards. Be your worst critic; because if somebody else is still pointing out flaws you didn't see, you haven't developed the eye, or the hand, enough to make a go at it as a pro... if that's even part of the plan for you. Too many guys put themselves out there too soon... before they've developed the CONSISTENCY required to be a reputable craftsman... and ruin their shot before they even get off the ground. But if you're in it only for the DIY... the stoke... the pleasure of board building as an extension of your surfing life, then you can't ever go wrong. It will always be a source of fun (though sometimes frustration as well!) and sort of fills the void when it's flat or you can't surf, for one reason or another. Good luck, and have fun!
I'm only in it because its fun to do I'm going to school to become an engineer.. I wasn't declaring myself or anything I was stating how a lot of people get on these internet fights ect. Or yelling in the water constantly. While I've always noticed if your nice the guys share advice if it s shaping surfing whatever. The point of the whole thing was that the happiest surfers at the end of every session always seem to be the nice ones.
the problem i have with 'too happy' surfers is when they get carried away with their stoke and invite 5 friends to paddle out with them or hoot their friends into waves they don't have priority on or, my personal fave, tell you the wave is a 'party wave' after they drop in on you.. in a limited resources sport, often your fun can come at the expense of someone else so be considerate and allow yourself to be happy when someone you don't know gets a good one..
I am so glad my spot isn't crowded. I love party waves with friends, and can always be sure my group is the only one in the area. It probably also has a lot to do with the fact that no one I surf with takes themselves too seriously.
The infamous 'party wave.' The only party you don't want to go to. I'm all about partying, but not at the expense of others.
so anyone who doesn't want to dropped in on is taking themselves too seriously? this is a perfect example of the good vibes jerk. how about i screw your girlfriend later? no? whoa, don't be so serious brah!
Don't be a ****. You are making **** up and putting words in my mouth. I am simply stating that I enjoy surfing with friends and we share waves. There is nothing wrong with the whole party wave thing if you are only among friends. Also, our area is key because we don't have to bother anyone else (and no one bothers us). I am also glad that not a single person I have ever met out surfing the Carolina coast has ever used the word "brah."
"This wave is your wave, this wave is my wave, From California, to the New York Islands" "This wave was made for you and me"
The result of spending too much time in Waikiki. Romney built that house in La Jolla so he can paddle out with binders of boards, drop in on people, vibe, stink-eye then ship the break to China. (to the sensitive: Try to take a joke)
