Waves vs School

I graduated hs more than 10 years ago, and even back then the school automatically called your house and left a voicemail that you were not in school. Had to get back home asap and delete those before the parents got home.

 

SKIP SKIP SKIP!!!!!! Although there are a lot of factors at play here (like quality of waves, quality of student, etc.), the fact that you're actually asking a bunch of people if you should skip shows a certain level of responsibility, which means you're probably a good student. Ipso facto you can afford to skip. I always used to max out my skip days in high school and because I was a good student no one ever said anything. I'm so wave starved right now I would skip work (it's actually a lot like school in respect to skipping) for some knee high rollers...

In all sincerity, the OP should go with his/her instinct. I graduated from college in 2011 & I have been stuck at a desk since. You can't skip work, but you can skip school. Know what's ahead of you and live it up while you still can.

Sick days + personal days = surf days

On the greater topic, it's somewhere in the middle. Should you make a habit out of skipping school when there's decent waves, just cause it's been a while since your last sesh? Probably not, but I might hang on to that day until it's warmer and/or better, or just jump out after school. On the flip side, is it going to kill your future to miss a day here and there to surf all day? Hell no.

Always gotta hang on to a few days for use during hurricane season. Although come to think of it, I guess if you're in school, that would have meant running through all your sick days in the first two months, which would have made for a pretty remainder of your year

 

Who is to say that you're not doing it right? Unless you're a pro, you're not making money when you surf. Surfboards aren't cheap and oceanfront rent is outrageous. For me, it would have to be overhead and glassy (all day) to even qualify for a vacation day. Next time you skip out on work, catch a nice one for me. I'll be staring at the forecast on WBLive.

OR if you're using paid time off i.e. the aforementioned sick and personal days that would usually go to other uses. Really though, comment was only intended to point that you don't need to "live it up while you still can" - I'm still living the very much not-a-pro-surfer dream and have no plans of stopping! I don't live right on the ocean, or even in a town/city that fronts the ocean, and the current state of my quiver can certainly vouch for the cost of surfboards - doesn't mean you can't take some time (especially sick and/or personal time, which in most cases is paid time that goes to waste if not used) to get out of the office for a day!

Vacation days, now those get stored and used en mass on surf trips. There's a method to the madness.

I try to make it a point to only skip work/school when the surf is going off. Usually can squeak dp in before my day gets started, or a sunset glass off at the end. Why not just to that, and get drunk as f*ck.

 

I will skip for a hurricane anytime. I save my paid time off for those occasions.

 

I only have 15 days off & I am the youngest of four surfers within my company. My boss is well aware of the sporadic "dentist appointments." "Live it up while you still can" was not intended to be applied to a location or surfing expenditures, but rather the fact that life is only going to present more and more obstacles. It would be presumably easier to skip school than a job, which has a direct impact on your financial status. You can call in sick every day for a month, but the juice will never stop flowing. Balance does more justice to life than it does surfing. In my post, I mentioned that it would have to be prime conditions to justify taking a day off, like the two days I took off for Sandy. The key to "live it up while you still can" is what preceded it: "know what's ahead of you."

 

You're gonna need that in order to communicate with your future co-workers...



OK, I'll stop jiggling your jigger (another "cultured" drinking measurement reference for ya Gaff). I skipped plenty, and more for beavertailwetsuits than surf. I'm lucky and somewhat unlucky I don't have a 9-5 kinda gig. I work whenever, the problem is I often work whenever, i.e. every day.
