it wouldnt be fair to compare nic von rupp to a sponger.that euro fever is legit and cant be fukd with.i remember many years ago jamie o brien took off behind mike stewart on a 3rd reef bomb, and jamie got spit out first followed by stewart.spongers cant pump like u can on a surfboard, but they do charge.it seems like any situation a sponger gets himself into, somehow always makes it out.theyll pull into a closeout and come shootin out the lip,do a 360 air and float away.i dont hate tho, riden a wave is what its all about, whether your riding a board, sponge, lunch tray or just bodysurfing

I almost feel guilty, I can't help but want to drop-in on the d!<$ draggers. I don't out of respect for fellow wave riders, and I suppose there may be a few waves more suited to sponging, but for the most part they should learn to stand up! It's natural progression in my mind. I learned to ride and read waves on a bodyboard myself. 360, weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Nic Von Rupp rips.

Hiyooooo! I think it's the funniest term around for spongers, had never heard it before seeing a sign hanging on the fence at Pipe saying "No d!*& draggers!" Don't get so defensive, the speed thing is just physics.

you must be new to this forum. Getting defensive is the only thing keeping it alive

The only thing that really gets my goat is when bodyboarding doesn't get recognized as a serious form of wave riding and how what you can do on a sponge that can't be done on a stand up goes unnoticed. Guys boost on sponges on waves(in terms of size and heaviness) that can only be "made" on a stand up; all the slabs that weren't ridden until spongers were there, etc. I personally love the idea that I can get barrelled out of my mind on a 3-4 ft day. I disagree with the "natural progression" idea also, to me riding a wave on a sponge feels right, and I've ridden plenty a wave standing up, and will do so again when the conditions call for it, but will always consider my bodyboard as my primary vehicle. So anybody that claims they "want" to drop in, I say go for it, that s##t will eventually catch up with you.
@Scotty, I only get defensive when idiots try to debate factual information, such as proven demographical data. All this d$$k dragging speedbump stuff doesn't bother me. I only see you chiming in here to talk s##t and stir the pot, so go ride some river waves and stop whining about the current state of the SI forum.

getting recognized and being noticed are waaaay overrated. especially in this day and age where everybody seems to be all about promoting themselves. just do what you love to do and ignore the SI stokekillers.

someone was talking about tunes in another thread. i find this one inside my head a lot paddling out and staring at glacier covered mountains. bonnie dobson wrote it, but jerry killed it:

Where have all the people gone, my honey?
Where have all the people gone today?
There's no need for you to be worrying about all those people
You never see those people anyway

Right on Cresto, agree 100% on both counts. And good call on Morning Dew, I can't listen that song without getting the chills...check the one on ****'s Pick's 24(Winterland '74), my personal favorite, Jerry absolutely shreds and there's Phil bombs that rattle the walls of my house.

*found the link on youtube but the quality doesn't do it justice. I'd happily email it to ya if ya want a copy.

When I was in Rincon PR I saw more skilled bodyboarders than I had ever seen before. I've never been into it myself, i mean if I didn't have a surboard I could see myself trying it out, but these guys I saw were absolutely killing it, and boosting some of the biggest airs i've ever seen in person. Mad respect to those dudes, as it definitely takes skill to do what they were doing, spinning around like crazy, getting in small barrels nobody else can get into, and then launching like 10+ feet in the air and doing all sorts of mistyflips and sh*t, pretty bad ass stuff if you ask me. No joke

I hear ya man, I love those aspects of it too. We're all drawn to the same thing, it's just another approach. Ultimately as long as you're having fun while not putting anyone in danger it doesn't matter what's being ridden, although surf kayaks make me a little nervous.

Yup I used to body board until I was 15. Learned how to surf and kinda stopped doing it but during the summmer ill screw around on it still. love how easy flippers make it into getting into waves. and as to the jerrry garcia, I always get chills listening to this.

Why all the hate for bodyboarders? I have no hate for them and I actually find most of the time that they are more fun to be in the lineup with then shortboarders. Longboarders are top of the list though for nice guys. At my favorite spot though it seems as soon as there is more shortboards in the lineup then longboards, all kindness and respect goes downhill, in favor of serious faces and silence with the occasional agro.
