So I'm out catching some nice chest-shoulder sets yesterday on Jupiter Island. Me and about 6 other guys, all very chill, just trading waves.....then.....some guy comes out on a ski with his kid and just starts jetting him into waves. Are you serious?!?! I cannot understand how a guy can find it "ok" to bring a 1,000 lb ski out there to catch shoulder high waves? Sorry just wanted to rant, I guess I should stop being so shocked by the audacity of people. But please buddy if you're reading this....KEEP YOUR DAMN SKI OUT OF THE WATER!
Super fun the past 2 days and it still looks fun! To many spots around here. In with the good air and out with the bad.
Keep your damn ski out of the water??? Where else should he use it? Maybe when he got the ski, the manual said to only use it on Jupiter Island.
Anchor Point during a bombing January swell in 2009 and the Roxy Team guides were running a ski and a zodiac through the lineup, giving rides back to the top of the point and filming, and it REALLY took away from what was one of the best big days of surf I have ever experienced. The smell and noise of the two-stroke buzzing constantly was truly obnoxious. I realize you can't ever expect to surf solo there or without distraction (cause the "rash" is always on it at Anchors), but the girls' support team was too much. Attached pic doesn't do the crowd or size justice, but you get the idea.
i don't agree with bringing a ski to surf there, but it is allowed. there are however specific rules on how far the ski can come within the shoreline and other swimmers
I believe maritime law requires 100 yards from the surf line or something like that. This of course only applies to populated beach municipalities
Unless you're at an offshore break there aren't many places on the east coast where tow-ats/ins would be legal. Most localities have a 300'-1000' rule. If they do allow launching from the beach you are restricted to the minimum speed to maintain steering. With that being said, if a tree falls in the forest and nobody hears it..... I don't care if you're if you're wake surfing in the shorebreak with dad's $150,000 cigarette boat as long as the people that have to deal with you and pay for your f**kups are you and the guy at the end of the rope.
And why didn't you just confront the man, be nice but firm, and explain how dangerous it is, he may have just left, I know the area and there are plenty of places without people around to do that kind of crap, and if he gave you and your buds a hard time that's when I would have made a call...no doubt
This reminds me of a similar situation when I was in high school. Surfing on a decent glassy day on the South End,one of the rare days the jetty breaks with solid wedges, with about 5 other folks I surfed with on the regular. All of a sudden some roided up kook with a buzz cut shows up on a ski (imagine NJShredmachine on a ski) and proceeds to try and ride the waves, weaving through all of us in the lineup. Well, we started yelling at him then he proceeded to talk sh!t. Me and two other guys paddled up to him--one on each side and one right in front of him, I was on the kill-switch side of the ski. Guy on the other side pulled the dude by the lifejacket trying to pull him into the water while I grabbed the kill switch tether off his arm and off the ski then tossed it into the impact zone. Guy in front of the ski started pushing it towards shore while the beefhead tried to swim down the dude that pulled him in the water. Wave catches the ski and flips it upside down then pushes it up against the breakwall... a couple more waves come in, trash the ski in the wall and push it towards shore until it hit bottom. We all paddled away from the guy as he was having a conniption and proceeded to laugh and watch him retrieve his ski only to realize he didn't have his kill switch key. The cops eventually showed up, wrote the dude a ticket then left... with the guy still stuck on the beach with a disabled ski. Not necessarily condoning this solution, but it sure was funny--especially since the cops waved at us right as they were leaving. (Anyone who was around WB back then remembers Trey, coolest cop WB ever had)
Yea, I hear ya, it would be hard to talk smack when you have 3 or 4 guys surrounding you, good for you Erock, I don't condone it either but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.
Yeah, sorry just wanted to rant about it before, first time I've ever seen a ski zoom past me in the lineup. I just didn't get why he wasn't catching the really nice waves like 500-600 yards out, if you've ever surf near the Jupiter Inlet area you know what I'm talking about, just seemed like a reckless waste to be catching the break closer to shore.
"some roided up kook with a buzz cut shows up on a ski (imagine NJShredmachine on a ski) and proceeds to try and ride the waves, weaving through all of us in the lineup." Erock I'm trying not to envision that, but it's hopeless. Some of your best work there, Erock.
Well, if one agrees with Darwin's theories, then we are all decended from a-holes. Really. The more aggressive and pushy homonids would push aside the more laid back ones (you know the ones with a sense of ettiquite and manners instilled within them). These pushy hominids ate more food and mated with more of the females passing the douchenozzle gene on for hundreds of thousands of years to Year of Our Lord 2013. What we see is the perpetuation of this evolutionary trend. And it looks like Captain Ski has begun to reproduce. . . .
