You're on a funshape w/ a go-pro and try to educate someone about priority on the beach after dropping in on them at Swami's. Haha. Go paddle out at north jetty in OB and ask them about priority.
Get over it. There was no need whatsoever to do anything about it. It is a very bad precedent to set for yourself when you are still developing as a surfer. If this bothers you now you will turn into a grumpy middle aged surfer and we already have too many of those. Shake it off and move on because it will happen again and again and yet again guaranteed.
Lol, Original Poster... if you're going to be in the wrong you might as well be in the wrong big time!!! this is not a big deal though. Its just part of the surfing experience. But that guy must have been like WTF!!! when you confronted him on the beach.
This hahaha. I can't imagine being that other guy. "damn kook cut me off... errr.. I had priority... errr whatever" Your speach ... " Wait? what? FU!%$#$%^&&^%$%^&&^%$$#$%"
But in this posters defense... I only watched the video once... But the one documented rule, especially in California to me is this: If you are up first, albeit out of position, technically the guy behind him is a D-Bag... In the video, the posted of this video was up and riding, then about 2 seconds later, you see the late drop behind him... That is a drop in... I mean, this situation has a grey area for sure... I mean, we have all been in a better position, and late dropped while someone is obviously already up and riding... Its just a di** move. Thats all.... Priority is priority, but when a guy is already up and riding, and its obvious, you need to back off. Because if you were in better position, you shoulda BEEN took off! I know that the rules of surfing have the wave priority written out pretty simply, but that guy behind him is simply a d-bag, especially in a waist him mush burger.... I mean, we call all pump through white water to come out the other side and surf around someone... Thats just not gentleman-like.... I would have told the guy to f*** off too. straight up.
First off...after reviewing your "video evidence" you only looked to the right before you popped up so it's no wonder you didn't see the guy to your left. Don't feel bad though...we've all done this once or twice. Second...don't expect respect from anyone if you've only been surfing for six months. You earn your place in the lineup. And finally...be careful who you heckle. Watch this video and take notes...Don't f*** with angry surfers. http://www.theinertia.com/surf/jeremy-flores-sunny-garcia-violence-disqualified-burleigh-breaka-pro/
Going on the idea that I will never be anywhere near sunny.... Im a lot bigger than sunny... I just checked his wikepedia page out.... If he wants a piece of the "fitzy torpedo"... well then... load the torpedo bay!!! lol.
"cold water surfing" LMFAO! to the op, as others have already said, you were in the wrong, regardless of whether you were "up first". that's not the indicator, positioning is.
It does not matter who is up first. a longboard can catch the shoulder section of a wave before a shortboarder can catch the peak. The shortboarder still has priority, as he is inside and on the critical part of the wave.
Fitz 100%.... You saw the Fitzy Torpedo! It's been banned in 7 states for being so bad ass! Sunny wouln't last one round
Yeah that's true, the ole Fitzpedo is a nasty manuever I wouldn't wanna F with. Plus he sits waaaaaaaay outside so Sunny would definitely lose.
Duly noted. Don't wanna be an angry surfer and wouldn't want to confront them. That being said... I'm gonna take this discussion and move on to less crowded, more laid back breaks. thx
Dude, you don't have to go to another beach just because of one incident, these things can happen at any beach. My suggestion would be to just be more aware of your surroundings and know when to go and when not to go. You were pretty far ahead of that guy at 1st and then he walked you down from behind, so i'd suggest working on getting more speed down that line and you won't have to worry about that happening should you happen to get up on one by accident and don't have inside position. Lastly, having a GoPro on your board will make you stick out like a soar thumb in the lineup and being you've only been surfing 6-7 months, it just makes you a target for someone looking to burn you. Keep it up though, you look decent for someone just learning.
Solid suggestion, my only point was you don't have to leave a beach you like to go to just because you had one one incident. Is it better to go to another beach that's less crowded but almost as good of quality? Sure, I would, but I also wouldn't let one incident chase me off either.
