I am getting mixed info about renting/taking boards to Costa Rica. Some are saying the boards that are available down there are usually in poor condition. I am also getting people saying just the opposite. Would like to hear what you have seen/experienced when traveling there. Is it worth the risk of damage(and the cost) to just take my own? Will be in the Jaco/Hermosa area. Thanks for any feedback.
Jaco, no problem. Try not to get too distracted by those big brown round beans and rice booties and you shouldn't have any trouble finding a board. Some more remote places, you might have some issues.
I was in Jaco last April and had no problems finding a nice board. Good selection at most shops with unlimited switches between boards. Even saw a few boards from local VB/OBX shapers. Saved a bunch of $$ and travel hassles.
Like others said, you can find what you need in Jaco. Last time I got a channel islands fish for the week for 100 bucks. it was in near new condition. Also had another rental, LB, that was 100 for the week. Good luck, and bargin.
I have been travelling to Jaco/Hermosa for over 8 years and have a place a the north end. If you take boards in will cost anywhere from $300 - $600 round trip. You can usually get away with taking two boards in one bag if you pack them to look like one. It depends on your airline...we always fly Spirit and have never had a problem...even fit 3 boards in a bag and got away with it. Bulbble wrap is the key and pack towls around the bag...make it tough for them to see in. There are PLENTY of surf shops along the main street in Jaco with hundreds of used boards in good condition from $200 on up. You can always get some of that money back if when you sell the board to another shop down there. It's your choice.
