Assateague Sunday

i was down in the area where u could park on labor day. not sure which way the swell was but in the am the waves had alittle more power and kept rolling better then the area outside of kcoast. the ocean city waves were fast hollow and quick. the assateague waves werent as hollow but had more power and broke longer.

sounds like you're referring to a little further north than the lots - if you got a boat you'll definately find something, if the southside of the inlet's not breaking just keep motoring. I just hope you're a strong paddler because if you anchor outside and then get worked a few times that paddle back out to the boat gets a bit tough

 

Or you could anchor the boat in the sound and just paddle to the beach. Might be safer to keep your boat there too...

seriously. i've heard of people surfing the shoals. Never have seen so much as a picture. I know you can see them breaking, but surfable? how big? shape? mush burgers? I've heard hollow and pealing but really? seems unlikely to me

 

the shoals are unpredictable. i take a jet ski out there every once in a while and jump the waves. that is very fun and the waves do get big. i havent seem them hollow yet and surfable it would take timing and practice but it could get pulled off. i get freaked out y sharks more than anything out there

 

Ready to take on some bombers on the Walden.....watch out for the donkey turds though

 

I've heard from those that have surfed them that the shoals are very fickle, with lots of big fish swimming around, but get em working right once and you'll talk about it the rest of your life.
Is it worth the time and effort when other spots are more reliable ? your call

 

Assateague is usually a good call when the swell is over 4 feet. "The Wedge" as it's called might be good with the hard NW wind but don't expect to have the place all to yourself. I've paddled over there from the inlet area in the dead of winter just to find the place being held down by a few groms. If you have a boat def worth a check! Hit me up if you do, there's a ton of good sandbars in the Assateague Island area!
