For those of you who haven't heard, the oc (maryland) inlet is a designated surfing beach this year on all week days (except for holidays). No bodyboarding while lifeguards are on duty. I'm expecting lots of crowds... Apparently the locals have been fighting for this for some time now. What do you guys think of this?
I guess we'll see. I hope this is a good thing, it might relieve the crowds at the other surf beaches. And i always here the inlet gets some good surf on occasion, but i never hit it right. But i think what they should do is widen the current surf beaches up to 2 blocks. That would ease some tension between some people when its crowded. 4 blocks out of 145 is that too much to ask?
This is definately a good thing... I've been in the ocmd waters for three years, and I've seen the crowds at the surf beaches get bad. The thing that confuses me is that this town makes all its money on the allure of the "surf culture" and is nazi strict about where and when people can surf. Can you say hypocrites??? To say the least it is a strange place to live, and while I bodyboard most of the time, I would never ride my glass at the surf beaches. You might as well get a fin and cut yr own arm. I prefer summer time dawn patrol sessions, always a good vibe then. So while it doesn't really effect me, this issue has bugged me since I got here. Mainly because of the lack of respect during tourist season, enviromentally and personally. The sad fact is that this is a greed issue with the town of ocean city, and because of that they are going to do as little as possible for surfers because most of us live above the stinky cloud of greed and excess. So it may be a good thing, but if you've ever been to a surf beach on a day with decent wave, you know that SurfRiders suggestion of making them wider makes far more sense. Just like the old line "its not quanity, its quality"... the surfers who ride these streets need more room. This is common sense, but apparently thats too much for the people in power to comprehend. They're too concerned about taking care of the people who trash the shores and come here to get blasted drunk for a week. A family resort with a bar on every corner... yeah, right.
its a safety issue. but i think its interesting that they allowed the inlet to be a surfing beach, since it is generally very crowded with people in the water. overall, surfers should be pretty stoked, since it is prob the most consistent summer time wave (s swell spot). another idea, is instead of having just the 2 surfing beach in north or south oc, to make 4 surfing beaches. why not? the surfing population of oc has definitely increased big over the past 5 years.
