I grew up in San Diego (15yrs), joined the Navy and became a diver... lived in Hawaii (7yrs), Guam (2yrs), Japan(2yrs) and VaBch(2yrs).

Now I reside in Pax River, MD. I travel 4 hours to surf !!! Why your ask,... $$$$. Got a great job making bank, million dollar home, killer cars, pretty much just working part time. (my choice)

Here's my solution,... by an older late model FULL Size truck and get a camper shell and convert the inside with a carpet kit to make it your home away from home. Spend the wknds at the beach. Myself, well I have a nice camper I put on my Rock Warrior Tundra complete with stove, refridge, heater, bed, sink, etc...

Or you could do the smart thing, join the Navy and become a Deep Sea Diver like I did and surf all over the Pacific. You can get orders to Guam, Okinawa, Japan, HAWAII, California. Get all kinds of special bonus pay and surf the world on the Navy's dime. After a few years in you'll be making about $60,000 a year. Plus free college if you want. I'm 50 and retired (Navy Diver) now and get a check for thousand's every month in the mailbox, YEAH!

Navy Diver, we dive the world over!

Or you could just be a loser burnout and sit on your ass, smoke dope, become a dope-head and cry in your beer the rest of your miserable life, it's up to you.

You are young. There really isnt too much of a difference between 2 hours and 1 hour. Wait to get your license and go to the beach all summer and on weekends. Study hard, and when you graduate, go to a college on the beach. Move to San Diego for college. Go to Florida, or UNCW.... There is plenty of time, so don't trip on it. The question was, what do you do? Nothing. Since you are 14, the choice isn't really yours, so roll with the punches and work hard to get in the water whenever you can. Set the rest of your life up to be near the sea and the rest will all work out...

And from Havre de grace, the nearest beaches will actually be in New Jersey... So, you can look forward to a little more consitency than you are used to... You can make it happen. Tell the parents the sob story and force them to take you to the shore all the time. You are young... Stay hungry and work hard.

an hour away is long enough if you're not yet driving..how much diff is it gonna be, (another hour).
you've got pleny of time to figure things out--I know you want to be in the surf every day, but even living at the beach doesn't guarantee you there'll be waves every day...
Take what deepc285 says to heart. Everybody's got to make their way in this world, and you need to find what works for you, something you enjoy doing and that pays a decent living.
That way you can afford that 2 hour drive, a new stick, wetsuit, surf trip, etc. You may not be able to do it tomorrow, but if you love the ocean, it'll still be there- and you'll be able to surf for decades if you're prepared in advance for it.
Or talk your parents in moving to a beach town--problem solved.

edited to add, I was typing while zach's post went up...much the same!

Sounds like at 14 there is not much you can do...
Sorry bro maybe you'll meet some guys in your new town that surf and you can snag a ride to surf!
On the up side - havre de grace is a pretty sweet town- plus at least you will still be on the water... You can always take up fishing... Or save up and get a hobie catamaran - you'll be stoked on one of those!

I agree, either kill yourself or join the Navy. Equally good ideas!
