You can't say Florida and not include the gulf there are plenty of good surfing days especially in the panhandle
That's all for now. FL can handle bigger swells than NJ but I think NJ has a lot more days where you can get barreled consistently. FL is sick, if I lived there I would surf there. I surf in NJ and it's a good time. It doesn't really matter where is better, if I'm surfing then I'm having a good time so **** all this spot comparison BS. If you live in FL surf there, if you live in NJ surf there. Who cares which is better?
Yes. Quite a change indeed. People are nice. Waves suck. But to be honest, most guys that paddle out here at least know what they are doing. This will be my first summer so who knows. But with all the great waves I've had in San Diego, anything under 6 feet was riddled with kooks all year long. Different for sure. I would take jersey or floridas waves any day of the week right about now. Check the SC forecast and its flatlined like a dead guy in the ER
NJ reppin' Waves eventually close out. It's just what naturally happens on certain waves when you do not have reefs. Just because a wave closes out after the surfer exits the barrel does not make it a bad wave. Some close out, other do not. We had quite a few swells like this, not as big, but pretty big, this winter, as we do every winter. check the 2-3 minute mark. Great barrels there. 2:20 is 100% made
Thats huge Ocean City Maryland. I havent seen anything from Florida much bigger than that. I took this one in Delaware this winter in the Doomsday swell. Delaware is pretty much in the armpit, but has it's moments.
man, ive never been to either one! i want to surf FL for the warm water and i want to get barreled in jerz. Anybody wanna road trip the next swell with me?? haha OBX is all i can vouch for. hatteras and frisco on big days can get heavy
Definitely good research. My ass is too lazy. That doesn't even put Florida and NJ in the same category.
That shot of Raven Lundy in O.C. is crazy. He got some great GoPro stills to. Had to paint it. Here is a warm left from Cinco De Mayo. Matt Laine from V.B. https://strobbr.com/100331 Florida all day.
Looks like i'm late to the party, good thread, but to be honest I think the decision is obvious. I'll be labeled a homer If I went all out and defended my home state putting up links to pics, videos etc., which I most certainly could do, but don't have the time while at work, if you really care you could do some youtube and google work on your own and find out for yourself, or live here for the 30+ years like I have.... sooo instead, i'll just say this place sux, you don't want to come here, nothing but mushburgers and rednecks, Paddington you nailed it my man, spot on, you sound like someone who grew up in FL and knows what time it is... You must know more than us Floridians. Hell, you might as well throw out that one lame quote again for a 4th time, sh*t, i'll do it for you... "Florida's got the oranges, but Jerzy's got the juice", did I get that right there Paddington? For F sakes that's one of the lamest quotes i've ever seen, you aren't the 1st to quote it either, so don't get your feelings hurt. Bottom line is Florida sux, it really does.
Woah there cowboy, don't get so hot and bothered........ By the way, yes, yes I do know more than people in Florida. I've seen many episodes of COPS and I'm pretty sure I know more than the criminals and the cops. Therefore, judging from that spectrum, I can deduce that I know more than pretty much anybody from Florida. "Florida's got the oranges, but Jersey's got the juice." Ha, fifth time's the charm. Oh, I won't get upset at your dislike of that quote because I didn't coin it. A Floridian did. See even youse guys' quotes suck, not just your waves......Actually I never said anything aboot "rednecks and mushburgers." So I'm not sure if I nailed it or not. Hey don't get angry at us opinion guys. Vent at Satan for he produced statistical data noting Florida's lack of bubs. Oh don't worry SUP guy, I don't get my feelings hurt on surf predicting intranet sites. Plus, I don't have any feelings left anymore. Sounds like you got your feathers a little ruffled, though. HOMETOWN PRIDE !!!! WHOOO HOOOO ! Gotta love it............
Not angry a bit, and I'm aware of the origin of the quote, doesn't make it any less lame. Maybe you don't get my brand of sarcasm, wouldn't be the first. You remind me of the loudest guy at the bar, always rambling on about something but is usually wrong and never stops talking because he wants the attention of those around him, All the while just being loud and wrong. Don't get me wrong, you amuse me at times but on this one you are talking out your ass. The comment about mush burgers and rednecks wasn't directed at you necessarily it's more or less the generalization made by those who have something negative to say, so I threw it in there, didn't mean to confuse you old fella, hey one more thing, ole boy had a point about not including the Gulf coast of Florida, although it does suck most of the time, it does have its moments every year that are just as good as anywhere on the east coast. But it does make up about half of our coastline, so it is what it is, is it fair? No it's not fair, but I don't make the rules.
Florida has a lot of coastline. I would argue that we have more quantity and therefore more quality surf down here. That and it's warm. For those reasons florida is better.
2 full winters in jersey there are alot of days that have big tubes that dont get photos or exposure. Every swell ends in a cleanup tube day. Surfed almost every day this spring. EPIC best place ever if u know where and when to go.
Water looks gross up there...I'll take crystal clear water and above 70 degree water temp 80% of the year.
FL has the length of coastline and better potential for epic conditions, even though they are few and far in between. Consistency is probably the same with NJ maybe scoring more during the winter months. Although if you're talking about a better place for a surfer to live/work overall, I think FL wins. Warm water year round in the lower half of the state, close to epic spots in the carribean, drive a couple of hours to take advantage of a system that is in the Gulf - if the Atlantic is dormant, and beach access for the most part is easy and free. I do think its not fair to compare states, maybe compare regions instead, like lower SE vs MidAtlantic, etc.
This was just on surfline not too long ago, says Florida got the best of it, not the best write up or photo coverage, but a few good ones. I believe it says somewhere that the bouy off canaveral read 15ft, although that translated to mostly 6-8ft with some sets possibly bigger at the best spots, none of which were posted in this article unfortunately. http://www.surfline.com/surf-news/florida-swell-photos_95958/
that article is a good case for New Jersey. It says that the last time Florida had swell better than New Jersey was in October and that was for the 1 in 100 year Sandy Swell. That's 6 months! LOL! You have two swells in 6 months where the waves were better. We had a good deal of very big swells in December, February, March, April and May. Only January was a bust. I have 2 friends who went to school in Florida. They surfed there for four years. They say Florida doesn't even hold a candle. They do say that the surfing life in Florida is more appealing with the temps but the waves suck except for a few hurrican swells.
