Slow day at work so was watching some surf internet clips. Some good stuff out there while other clips just make my eyes bleed. I find the editing techniques below just awful to watch. Constant slow-mo: I really, really don't need to see every. single. wave. in slow motion. Particularly can't stand normal motion then cut to slow-mo on every little maneuver. Don't show the landing: If someone doesn't land an air, either cut the clip or have the decency to show them fall. It can still be a good wave with a fall at the end, this isn't the WCT. You're not fooling anyone when you cut the shot right before a landing. Don't show the drop: This seems to be fairly prevalent, and I guess is fine for waves that aren't that tough to get into. But for steep/hollow waves with critical drops, I want to see the guy get into it! Sometimes just making the drop is the hardest part, why not show it? Curious what others think and what you can't stand?
Couldn't agree more, i wanna see them paddling into the wave, can't stand that every click starts with them already up or right in the middle of their pop up.
surfing vids are totally hit or miss and most of the time they miss. and miss big time. Gopro's do not make for good vids unless they are just sparingly peppered throughout a beach view video. Also, a gopro on a short board is just useless. totally agree on the video cut of an air that stops right before we would expect to see it landed or in most cases just into a wipe out. the other thing about surf vids... surfing is the biggest "me-centric" sport one can engage in and I don't see the reason to watch other average surfers or even less than that surf... its kind of a bummer... lol
I don't mind seeing average surf/surfers if they are surfing at or near where I surf... otherwise, agree, it's just boring. Haha it seems this is pretty much obligatory these days. Some guys can throw the non-surf creative stuff in there and make it look cool and interesting, but it's really an art form that most have not mastered.
I think a high percentage of the vids out there don't show the drop because there isn't one. Get couple goons with a go-pro and a jet ski put some skrillex on top and you got yourself the next youtube sensation.
I had surgery on my surfer's ear in December - couldnt surf for three months...i still wanted to go to the beach when there were waves, and figured I'd just shoot some video since no surfing. Never really tried it before, or attempted to edit video. No tripod, windy cold conditions, no idea who was in the water. Plus the camera auto focus kept screwing up! Included the drops because I just figure its a big part of the deal on a cold offshore day...i think i hit slowed down one clip just to see how that editing feature worked. What i like about it is without any attempt to polish it up, you kind of get a truer picture of the conditions...which were typical east coast winter. I know it is some amateurish sh!t: https://vimeo.com/56449050
Aside from the auto focus, pretty solid IMO, I'm no videographer, but good stuff...the only slow-mo part I saw the dude made the drop and pulled right in, good time to use that feature.
