After surfing the overhead sets from Hannah it has come to my attention that I am not as strong of a swimmer as I thought I was. ECU has a rec center with a pool that I can use for free. I think I am going to start swimming several times a week while I can't be surfing. I don't know if it will build my strength or stamina, but it should at least keep me from losing the strength between weekends that I've built up over the summer. Today I swam 10 laps, at total of 500yds. I was to the point where I was fatigued at the end of each 50yd lap and needed to stop to catch my breath. This also has to do with my asthma, but excuses don't matter when you are in the ocean, so I want to improve on this.
hey amn at least you realized you need to work out so i congratulate you. cause remember if youre in college than you'll be busy with school work snd not be able to go to the beach alot to just paddle around and work on your paddling.
I've gone 3 times this week. I feel good about it so far. Obviously any work out isn't going to do much in a week, but it feels like my arms aren't getting fatigued as quickly. If I can keep it up I definitely think it will help.
it all takes time. cause thats what i've learned after tearing of of the teandons and dislocating my knee from a surfing accident a few years back. and im still afraid to that same stunt over after that result. but im practicing getting back.
Swimming has helped me .. I was slowing down in the paddling dept and getting winded easily ( 55 yrs old ). Now I leave the office at lunch and swimm 1000 yards or a little more every day. It only takes 30 minutes of actual swimming and resting combined. A real competitive swimmer would laugh at this. They go 5000 yards every morning. But what I am doing has made a big difference in my capability to paddle out and catch waves. I would recommend it for anyone of any age.
When the water cools down and there is a a few swells, the wetsuit paddle will be fun. That should burn the lats a bit and charge you up for late spring and next summer.
Hell yea. So far I've only been doing 500 yards per swim. Take less than an hour. I have a reallly small lung capacity so I have to take a break after each 100 yards to catch my breath and keep from getting dizzy.
swimming Hey all. I can tell ya, swimming laps - easy & slow - over the years, will make a HUGE difference in your surf abilities and enjoyment WHEN YOU ARE IN YOUR 50s (like I am!).
i need to practice paddling more for when the paddle-out is long. i mean, i'm good at paddling but i want to get out there faster when there is a long paddle-out.
