Tis the season, I usually never have any issues w/anybody in the water, last weekend had 3 summertime pros get mouthy, it comes with the territory. Just keep your cool, realize they'll be gone come winter time and bide your time till then. At least that's what i've been telling myself.

Dude, are the crowds really that bad in Rhode Island? I'm not being a wise-ass, I'm seriously axing. If the crowds are that bad in Rhode Island then there is really something wrong and drastic measures need to be taken.

Ahh, you people cried aboot the "Spicoli" image......you wanted to be taken seriously. You wanted surfing in the olympics.........You wanted to be recognized as a "serious" sport.............

NON !!! This is all wrong. Surfing is not rock climbing or some activity to be done on your leisure time. It's aboot saying F YOU to normal society, and dedicating your life, not to materialistic pursuits, but the spiritual bodhizzatva essence of something greater than yourself.

It's aboot paddling out, on a cold, grey day, by yourself and pushing yourself, and learning something aboot you and this world. It's the thrill of sticking a late drop and the impending wall down-the-line as the seagulls watch from the beach.

It's aboot discovery and adventure, not calling all of your friends to go hit C Street on a Saturday afternoon or packing in with every other hobbyist at the local jetty.............while four blocks north the same peak exists with no one around..........

Say F YOU to Joel Parkinson and John Florence and embrace Randall and David Eggers.

yes the crowds on the weekends are horrendous in RI. people from jersey, ct, and massholes all flock here in droves. even dawn patrol is crowded. good luck. yes I love the winter wish it was freexing year round so I could ski and board year round also.

I don't think were gona end up getting head high up here in the northeast. Guess we'll see. I expect the forecast to change tonight or tomorrow morning to something like waist high. I might be wrong though.

The way I see it... even if the ASP becomes super popular and gets put on ESPN4 or ESPN-X or whatever, it just reinforces the idea that surfing is a warm water sport to the general public. Maybe summers get more crowded, but I dont think cold grey days will be any less lonely.

Someone recently asked me if I was excited for "surfing season" to be starting up again.

^^^Agree on the cold grey days...don't think they'll ever be crowded and you really have to love what your're doing to be out there...laughable comment about "surfing season".

Jetty, I hope you know more about surfing then you do about rock climbing. Climbing (and i dont mean gym climbing) has all the mental/spiritual aspect of surfing and then some. you can die in certain surf conditions but you and your partner can die every time you go out. way more climbers die every year pushing the limits. how much do you learn about the world on a cold grey wave?

climbing suffers the same popularity growth problems as surfing, too many people and too few climbs. ice climbing is even worse - a bunch of gumbies gang-roping an early season climb may prevent it from ever coming in that season for a leader. imagine the reaction of the local brahs if a kook could ruin a break for months? Somehow climbing lifers have been able to deal with the influx without the agro-hysterics of the allegedy hang loose, Bodi surfers. it can be a frustrating as heck but surfers probably have alot to learn from climbers.

there are alot of similarities in the two tribes and many great practitioners of both. Heck, Bodi had a pic of himself pulling a dangler from a sandstone roof on his wall ;)

Hey a rock climber !! Before you get too upset, rock climbing was just something I picked out of a hat. I don't get why someone would want to climb a rock, but I don't harbor any deep resentments to it, unlike most surfers' hatred of cyclists.

So, death - the risk of dying - is what makes a pursuit worthwhile? Why heck, you can drive into the ghetto and yell racial slurs and be killed. I wouldn't compare that to surfing.

Really, if some of y'all don't get what makes surfing mo special than anything else, then maybe y'all are on the wrong website.

Actually Wombat, I'm glad I have your attention. Why do people climb rocks? I'm being purely inquisitive here.

So you climbers have crowding problems too, huh? So, do people move next to their favorite rock and hassle outsiders and claim area codes?

And I've learned plenty on a grey cold wave........no partner......no saftey harness.........and surfing is fun, it's not an activity where there is some end goal. I'm guessing the only real satisfaction is getting to the top of the rock......a sense of accomplishment. Surfing is so much more than just a sense of accomplishment(ie nailing that air). God, some of youse guys need to go and watch Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

Hey Guys!!! Hey you guuuyyysss!!! (Chunk reference lol) so did you hear??? There is a swell coming. Quick- every body report their local conditions- and where they are going to surf so I know where it will be good.
At my spot down the street it's going to be 2ft and most likely sloppy - if any one wants to paddle out- I will be going out at the pipe. I heard its going to be really good down at the secrete spot in camden - but I'm sure it will be crowded- 8 ft peelers... What do you expect??? Lol love you guys! Your all great!!!! Now quick - let's go rock climbing!!!

Ps can some one spell check me???

I agree with everything you say...
But how much do you learn about the world climbing a rock? Or surfing a wave?
You learn nothing about the world from either, but you learn a lot about yourself doing both
