I gotta say, Summer has been really fun this year. Had another really fun day yesterday after a great run of swell the week before. Every year we get the same ole "Summer Sucks" threads, so I thought I'd throw Summer a bone this time. Anybody get some fun ones this past weekend?
I don't know what Bayhead or Deal was like, but this past weekend was ok. 2-3' +. My spot, or should I say, the spot I surf at, has a dumpy, inside sandbar working so it keeps minor swells interesting. It was almost there, but just missing something. Yeah the other week you SE people had an unusual low spinning of youse guys coast. Ain't nature wonderful. You win some ......you lose some, and you never know what's going to happen. That's one of the reasons surfing is better than climbing rocks. Ya know what it is that I be sayin' ? Hey SUP, when did you start surfing? Your stoke is strong. That's agood thing so don't think I'm being cocky when I ax you when you started surfing. I'm just curious George(EmassSpicoli's favorite books. He's written ten dissertations on the series.) Man, anybody up here who has a memory or knows what's up............the summer of 2010 was possibly the greatest summer in my lifetime(up this way at least). The sandbars at "the spot of which I surf" were all-time and the swell poured in relatively non-stop all summer. At least 3 days per week of waist + bubs. The town in which I surf, had it's busiest lifegaurding season ever. So there's some data to back up my theory. Yeah summer's been ok this year. Better than average I reckon. It can barely get over knee high during the whole month of July during bad years. It can be like that part of June and August too. So..............ya know. Could be worse......could be better. But ain't that always the case. SPEAKING OF SUMMER: We are kind of at the half-way mark. 1 1/2 months down........1 1/2 to go. Jeez, time flies when you get old. Jeez, in no time we'll be sittin in 5 mils off deserted beaches talking to seals. Stay young kids.....stay young.
Didn't get to surf all weekend due to work; but got to go out on a nice dawn patrol this morning and just came back as the beaches filled up with surf camps. Great longboard day and it's been hit and miss; but since I got my log it seems I get more hits than not. 2010 was a great summer.... thats the same year we had the hurricane off the coast that just churned out waves with little to no rain/wind on shore.
Had a nice surprise saturday morning, nothing to write home about, but better than forecast and managed to put some long rides together. And the water was just beautiful, so nice to trunk it.
What's up DP? I'm glad to hear that you're getting some fun waves down there. We've been at the mercy of some breezy south winds for the better part of the summer. We had sheet glass, chest high peelers on Friday afternoon, which was nice for a change. I got so pitted. The crowd is starting to thin out a bit. I only hit one person on the way to work this morning, instead of the usual three or four. And then you have this guy...
vb has been left out of any of this fun surf you speak of. Have not ridden anything over knee high in weeks.
Though I am a fiercely loyal South Jersey/Philly patriot, I watch PIX-11 News(NYC) every Sunday night at 10:00 pm with that Chinese chick(Kaity Tong). I would like to make sex with her. Ya know what it is that I be sayin? And Lionel is, like, the coolest dude north of Barnegat light. My cable provider has PIX-11 for some reason...... Anywayswho, I religiously watch the newscast every Sunday night. I like to see what you North Jersey/New York people are up to. And they showed some beach scenes from yesterday and it looked pretty fun, man. Sh!t, even that Rockaway place looked fun. Good for you NY/NNJ people. Good for youse.
If you enjoy waist high at best wind swells i guess. Between the crowds and gutless waves, it's harder and harder to paddle out each summer. Only a month and half to go.........
There was the occasional chest high set in north jersey this weekend when the forecast said 1-2ft. The water temp was also about 70 which was a nice change.
You missed Saturday evening then ... waist to stomach high, although it was a little choppy with onshore winds from the SE at around 10 knots.
I started surfing when I was 15, i'm 32 now, so 17 years ago. I was never really that committed though, it was just something I did here and there. Then the bug really bit me a few years ago around 29, and when I turned 30 I made the committment to make surfing a priority, and to see how "good" I can possibly get, because truth be told, I was never really that good, sure i'd catch some waves here and there, but when you only surf from time to time you can only get so good at it. Now, a few years later i'm out there holding my own, better than I've ever been, in better surfing shape than ever been before and i'm stoked out of my skull. Hope it never fades, because every session I go out i'm getting a little bit better, and a little better, and each session is more enjoyable than the last.
I enjoy waist high waves, but I also enjoy getting occassional chest high sets in the mix too. The day started off rather small, but it just kept building with the storms sitting off the coast, kept the seabreeze down to a minimum and they were coming in clean. The only bad part was the crowd as you say, lots of Tom Foolery going on for sure, but I managed to walk away unscathed.
Will we ever get a summer like '95 again? I was a youngin' back then, spent a lot of time watching from the beach.
That's too bad Bill Cosby's nephew. Like, literally, you don't comprehend what I am saying? Might that be why you don't have any pals in your hometown? I don't know. I don't know, maybe my form of intellect don't translate well with scientific geniuses? But then again, Mr. Brewengineer, just loves me, and he's SWELLINFO's premier scientist. So, I don't know. If you need an explination of anything just let me know. I'll be glad to help out. Let's see.......that last thread.... I will translate: I WATCHED A NEW YORK CITY NEWS PROGRAM(I'm speaking loud and slow) ON SUNDAY NIGHT. I LIVE IN SOUTH JERSEY SO THIS NEWS BROADCAST IS ON THE ONLY NEW YORK STATION MY CABLE PROVIDER CARRIES. I SAW SOME WAVES ON A STORY ABOOT BATHROOM ACCESSIBILITY ON LONG ISLAND AND THE CITY BEACHES. THE CAMERA FOOTAGE SHOWED SOME OF THE WAVES........THEY LOOKED FUN. There ya go. No need to thank me, BCN, it was my pleasure. If you need any further assistance feel free to ax.
The crowds have been non existent in my area. I haven't surfed with more than 3 people. Swell has been iffy though
Waves for everbody of any skill set for most of the days this summer, surf schools are cashing in for sure.
Saturday morning in OCMD was beautiful, nobody out and nice clean lines with some push behind them. Can't ask for much more..
