Good for you taking the leap and making something with your own hands. My family started racing boats after my grandfather and dad built a boat based on plans from Popular Mechanics in 1959 - four generations later, we still build boats together. A lot of the process is getting enough guts to make the first cut. Looks like a wave-catcher.
I wanted to keep the thickness: a.) dont know what Im doing, so didnt want to shave off too much and then be left with a wasted blank and b.) it should be able to catch anything.
go all out and put art on it before you glass it. unless you have an airbrush setup just get tape and acrylic rattle spray cans. H20 krylon is good. seal it with acrylic sealer. satin. or get pigments, or tints. first board deserves it
Im am artistically retarded. Was going to make a logo to put under the glass but couldnt wait to glass. Got that done over the weekend. Hot coat the other day. Just finished sanding it. I need to apply one more hot coat to fully fill in the voids and what not. Picking up some more resin thursday. The fins should be coming in the mail by tomrw.
Did you have the option to get a 3in thick blank or was this the only one available to you? You should have a fair amount of volume with the width, just thinking that there would be far more volume if you ended up with 2.5in or so after shaping. I'm interested to hear how this rides!!!
Honesty emass, when I picked up the blank, thickness was the last thing on my mind. I originally wanted to to shape a fish but then thought against it because of the glassing horror it would be tail wise. Atlantico, I did foil a couple of fins a couple of months ago just for the fun of it and they would be perfect for this board but if glassing on fins is anything like glassing a board then no thank you. Im going with fcs plugs. I would have to say the hardest part was glassing; not just the board but wrapping the corners of the nose and tail. I had to go back and sand out a couple of spots that didnt laminate onto the board and mix up some resin with glass fibers and fill those in.
Sooo much wasted resin wetting out the rails! If i knew what i was doing Id of had enough left over for another hot coat.
