Sorry I've given out the wrong Porsche number. i really meant to recommend the Porsche 914 with racks.
been looking around for one older then a 96. after that year the 2.5L has to be the worst engine ever produced. blown head gaskets galore. bummer cause everything else works good. to bad the loyale is hard to find.
Ha. Worst engine ever produced by Subaru perhaps, but still a viable option. I had a '93 1.8L Impreza wagon with 35,000 miles which I bought used for 3K in 2003, and that car made me feel the love. Eventually traded her in towards a WRX, which I probably wouldn't have even test drove had it not been for the Impreza. LOVED that thing, but needed a pickup. Needless to say I'm a Subaru fan, and you're right about looking into the older ones. Good luck man
Jeep Cherokee pre 2000. 4.0L motor and tranny both reliable as they come. they go forever, but suck down gas. i think thats a good tradeoff though..
would be stoked to find an impreza wagon with the 1.8 or 2.2. those are good surf cars. my buddy would take the passenger seat outta his and sleep in it on trips.
I used to pick up 88 GL wagons for under $500. 5 speed with dual range 4WD is some fun stuff in the mud. Honestly, you should be able to find a decent early 90's Legacy wagon for under $2k. I am also a long time Roo fan. I have owned an 88 GL Wagon (carb with 5 spd and DR), an 89 GL Turbo wagon (5spd push button 4wd), an 89 XT-6 (Flat 6 cyl 5spd 4WD), an 06 WRX (wife's car), an 07 WRX (wife's car after financing issues with the 07), and now I own an 11 STI as my daily driver.
+1 for this. I've got a '95 cherokee with 219k miles on it. AC blows cold and the car runs with minimal maintenance. Mileage is 19-21 so really not bad there either. I drive slow though.
I'd go with an old 4 cylinder jeep wrangler. How can you beat no top, no doors, windshield down and a board sticking out of the back? No roof tie-downs to deal with, and you can just hose 'er out if you get too much sand inside. Never owned one, but I'm trying like hell to convince the wife. Perfect surf chariot.
Minivan. take out the seats you can sleep in the back with yer board. Travel and surf anywhere 22 mpg
