After multiple fatal shark attacks in the last year reunion island has banned all surfing and body boarding. They are also going to do a shark cull and kill 95 sharks. Surfers can be fined and arrested. But its insane to kill off some sharks and stop being from surfing. Its a dangerous sport and is done at your own risk. . . .on the other hand you can score empty waves now and only pay 50 American. Not bad if you don't get eaten

Reunion's controlled by France, correct? Lame on the ban, lame on the cull...anyone know what species is accountable for the most deaths out there?

due to human involvement the shark population has grown to higher than natural levels... in my opinion.

East of Madagascar. And it's definitely the sealacamp. Thought to be extinct for 65 million years only to return from sabbatical a la Gruvi and murdah the scene. At least Volkswagen said so in a commercial years back with those mechanics.

Most scientific evidence points to sharp declines in shark populations globally. Sure there's hotspots of activity, Reunion clearly being one of them, but overall, sharks are fuc*ed, and they cant reproduce as fast as they're being killed off.
And as I asked before, I'm aware of Reunion's geographical location, but politically, is the island run by the French?

true. and not true. near and offshore over-fishing is making a lot of sharks more desperate and hunt reefs in shallower water.

CA for instance has seen a huge spike in seal numbers (since the marine mammal protection act) and thus shark numbers.

i know people are against culling sharks because they're apart of the environment, but we're people...we don't live in the environment!

And in MA thanks to the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 those sharks move closer to New England shores since it's caused the seals to reproduce like gremlins in the N. Atlantic waters. Yes, only one shark attack last summer which was the first in many decades, but Jaws looms. I don't care. I'm still out there at dusk and dawn filling my baggies with piss. Better hope I don't make a habit out of spilling sashimi remnants on said baggies prior to a sesh.

Really though, I guess the seals are an issue that pervades the fishing industry since they trail the boats and bite through the expensive nets as they're being pulled in. Now the commersh fishermen are out a net and a fair amount of their catch. Them seals bask in huge numbers at private beaches, both residential and inn/hotel owned.

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Like this morning. SI regulars read and rejoice at what our resident sage calls the end all be all post of the century and yankee scoffs while shotting in his own cocoa puffs. Just another typical day though!

So many problems will come from the extinction of sharks, when you get rid of an apex predator the food chain will get way out of balance, and will be overrun with other species. Killing sharks for prevention just seems like the dumbest things you could ever do to the ocean.

There going to target tiger and bull sharks only. Also they claim there is not enough fishing in the area because of certain restrictions. Abundance of fish = sharks

This. The first species that needs to be culled is Homo sapiens.

So be it, sharknadBro. We've got a shortage of threads and posts like da right coast has a shortage of mush and chop.

Now. Say "mush and chop" fast five times.

And yes, Hansel Buxton is so hot right now. Mogatu's execs are blowing up his agent's mini-flip phone
