Hey Swellinfo, Not trying to start an argument here or anything but...lately I've noticed the pictures that are being posted on here.... some are just plain garbage. I'm not saying that I'm a great photographer or anything and that my pics rule. But, just that I think there should be some sort of regulation. I mean moderators need to step up and reject some of the pics being uploaded. There are some really great photographers that post on this site. And their pictures just get buried in the pages by ugly shots. Anyone else feel this way?
I agree. But it will be hard to draw that line on what is a good picture and not. And what if someone uploads 30 GREAT pictures... that will just bury everyone else's photos as well. But I have seen some pretty crappy pic's uploaded recently.
Yeah, I also think there should be a limit per day of what you can upload. Just to clarify....I'm not talking about the mega pixels either...some great shots i have seen on here taken with a phone. Basically anything ugly should not be on here. You are right it would be tough to draw the line between a good shot or not. But, personally I think it's getting out of control.
Isn't that what the picture rating function is for? You can select the "what's popular" link to rank photos based on most viewed, highest rated, or most commented. Even if the pictures aren't the best quality, I still enjoy viewing them to give me an idea what the surf was like in certain areas...
Your missing the point....I said nothing about the quality. I wouldn't mind looking at someone boosting air caught on a 3.1 mp camera or phone. I just am tired of seeing pictures of closeouts.... people riding white water. ect....basically bad photography. This is a surf forum....I would like to see people surfing. Git-R-Done.....
Gotcha. Makes sense. Would be tough to create a generic rule to apply to all though... Maybe the upload page should have space for 3 uploads instead of 5?
Artist! As an art teacher and practicing artist, some of the crappy photos on here have NO stoke factor. Now, if you don't look for stoke in a photo then it better have Decent elements for our viewing pleasure. Swellinfo, you should create a best of Photo forum that is on the home or forcast page. The rest of the photos, under your judgment, put them in the pictures folder where you can find all photos. The best of category can allow me to view something good without looking through a handfull of SH!T? Can you do that for us please?
Even early on, when I first started posting pictures,...Over at SurfingOC.com, I really tried to post clear quality pictures. those first two or three years I never even did any crops or Photoshops of any of my pictures. But I still tried to set some type of standards to go by for myself. first is the clearness of the photo, which is a must. second is context. third is perspective. forth would be relationship of/between picture, surfer and background/enviroment. However, the make or break for me is completion of the wave. When I take multiple frames, i look to the end and if the surfer in question was able to complete the wave from start to finish. Believe it or not, I can say with some confidence that 98 to 99 percent of what I post, the wave was started and finished, successfully. That takes away from the idea of just grabbing a single frame, from say like a drop in or a barrel shot, when in reality the surfer crashed and burned. I have psoted some very bad...over/under exposed pictures as well as some with a hint of blurr in them. But for the most part I have tried to be honest and true to myself and those looking at the pictures, not to mention the surfers themselves, which...without them all we got is pictures of waves. <----not that,..that would be a bad thing but..you know what I am getting at. We are very lucky that so many people want to share. Also we are lucky we have some very good photogs around here,..younger and older. Point being though, Please try and set some type of higher standards for yourself if you are in fact going to or trying to take pictures for so many to view. P.S. keep things as are Micah........sometimes you got to take the good with the bad.
i vote to keep allowing crappy photos...as someone else mentioned, it's nice to see how the surf was on a particular day...even if it was 1 foot closeouts...
That's a great idea! /sarcasm Do you actually think before you type? Yeah, I love looking at 1 foot closeouts too. It's fun...... Anyway....It's not up to me....Just a suggestion...I'll be on here lurking regardless.
Yeah, seriously... Are you serious? WTF is the point of uploading 1ft closeout pictures? Way over my head on that one...
Can we just keep this to our opinions and stop bashing each others viewpoint. Thanks Here is a knee high wave from my June trip. Enjoy!
Agreed, and thanks - We think the suggestion is worthwhile just need to find a way to not discriminate.
Suggestion, if you wanna post a pic about how the surf was for a day, there should be a daily upload section. It would take some extra coding, and it would require a date of the photo, this way users can see photos of the surf before they go out, or looking back on a day to remember it. But good to one person might not be to another person. Its just a judgement call. I've seen plenty of blurry or poor color photographs that I still enjoy. But then there are crystal clear pictures with good color that I just despise. As for my photos, I don't care if the surfer made it or not, if it looks good only for 1 out of a sequence of 50, its still a good photo.
i agree. its a waste of everyones time to look at bad photos. no disrespect to anyone. most of the shots posted are great. once again agua is right
