I have to wonder how many of these ppl advising you
about how DANGEROUS such a trip would be have actually been
to any of the countries you are going to drive thru. As
someone here already said I'd be more afraid to drive thru
certain neighborhoods in my own city......

There's too much we can say that for. Sadly. I'm sure there's things to stay stoked™ about though and many things 3M improved or maniacs invented since.

i know a lot of women that have traveled though gmala down to panama single and with other girlfriends i was pretty surprised when they told me they did it alone and had no problems the whole trip, i think if your mindful of what your doing and dont travel so much at night youll be okay. i mean hell i met these people that drove down from Maine in a huge diesel truck i was shocked they came that far. just imagine Maine to costa f that would be pretty cool though. i would be more concerned about the roads then anything the pa highway being jacked up or under repair or something.

The most formidable leg of the Maine to CR trip is most definitely the toll and traffic at the GW Bridge. No good radio stations while you sit and wait either, I'm Sirius.

Yeah, I've never left Wilmington in my whole life.
Chicharrone has never lived down there.
    gnurider actually lives in Iowa.

    For full disclosure:
I said I know two people who have accomplished driving down there (no, haven't done it myself and don't necessarily plan on it. Sailing down to Panama and going through the Canal is more my speed.) One of the people I know is from sailing. He's driven a vehicle and sailed to C. America. It took him 3 tries in three different vehicles driving, but this was in the 90's when there was more guerrilla warfare and fewer cartels--not sure which is safer. Ironically he finally completed the trip in a diesel VW Vanagon. The other guy is a realtor I know who bought a "small" coffee plantation in CR about 5 years ago. He took an older right-hand-drive Land Rover Defender 110 diesel. Both took the PAH via Texas if I remember correctly.

If you want first hand knowledge regarding vehicle choice, repair support etc. go to this website: www.ih8mud.com
It's a LandCruiser tech site and quite a few of the users live in Mex and C. America and quite a few have made the trek at least once. You'll probably get better specific info there and probably make some connections with people you can meet and call on for help through your journey down there--especially if you tell them you will be buying a TLC for the journey ;).

Be forewarned though, no one is going to tell you that taking a new Nissan gasser down there is a good idea.

Sorry if I've offended anyones delicate sensibilities....

Pretty close, brah. Your bud's diesel raped him if it had more axles.

What PA you talking about? 95? The 76s? 81? None of em are a joy but Philly is a good spot.

Haha I had a cup of coffee in OH not too long ago. Was out there for a while. The ride you're taking is 90 right along the lake. You go through WNY, no? At least that's the northern route. You go straight across PA through the Poconos and everything? Awful ride. Amish galore. See if there are any bowling prodigies among them. Only good part of that drive is the brewery in Pottsville.

Driving a new Nissan Titan down there might be like placing a target on your back. If I was going to attempt the dive, it'd be with a reliable rust bucket. It's always been a fantasy of mine to make that trip. I say go for it.

Well, OP, there you have it: have some old people masks made & practice applying them to each other's mugs.
Practice a time-worn gait, get a good from-the-gut-cackle going on & tell the el corrupto border cops that the surf gear is for your grandbabies.

Should be an interesting trip. As well as the next screenplay from Hollywood.

might as well do it in a sailboat. Have you considered that? Or, maybe, fly down there, buy a toyota hi-lux, and drive back. Then you will be the coolest gringo ever when you get back in your south american Hi-lux. I want one of those so damn bad...

I'd give one of my marbles for a diesel HL and or a Troopie. Toyota never sends us the really cool stuff...

Wow....People on this board really buy into the fear machine. Could something happen to you? For sure. WILL something happen to you? Very unlikely. I have been to every central american country numerous times and have never had a problem. I have traveled from the Yucatan to Costa Rica by bus over a 6 month period...no problems. Drove the Pacific coast of Mexico a number of times....no problem. Last summer when I was in Mexico, I ran into to 20 or 30 people who had driven down no problems. How's this for a crazy one....I have two friends that drove a motorcycle, with a side car, from South Carolina, to Vancouver, to ....wait for it...Columbia...no problems. Check out their blog

Be smart, NEVER drive at night until you get to Costa, speak Spanish, enjoy your life! As far as getting parts for your truck and import tax etc., I can't help you. Oh yeah, there is a sick music fest at the beggining of Feb in Dominical called Best Fest--go check it out! Todo Tuanis Mae!
