I"m flying to socal next week and for better or worse am planning to take my board on the airplane (I've been before and have not found a place to rent anything decent). I"m flying United and they say their length limit is 115" my board is a 9'6" with the bag it might go over an inch or so. Has anyone travelled with a log and pushed the length limit?
Yah, took longboards on AA a couple times, before I found other options that enabled me to leave the sticks at home when on surf travel. The only goobers who got annoyed with us were a few business traveler types in the airport as we tried to navigate the gigantic coffin through the confines of DCA; the AA check-in folks were cool & gave us no hassle even though the thing was totally past the published size limit. Just be really nice to the check-in people, smile (a lot) & maybe bring the AA folks a morning snack from Cinnabon or something.
Fashion your bag and leash so it looks like you are following your board bag around the airport and not the other way around. Wear really dark glasses and act like one side of your body is partially paralyzed or maybe even wear a helmet. Tell them it's your "Service Log." Under the ADA they will have to allow you to take it on the plane (in the cabin) with you.
Thanks, that is encouraging, especially since I'm flying from DCA. How long were your boards and how did the boards fair? I'm also curious about your other options. I've found a old log on craigslist I could by while out there for the same price as hauling my own. I'm a little skeptical though because I don't really know what it will be like.
