I live in wilmington and am in HS so i know a thing or two about UNCW. It's a good school as far as academics go, but not fantastic. You'll probably have a better chance of getting into uncw than UC schools. Also, trust me, the surf isn't always there. You'll understand because you're from LI. The surf here usually stays from 1-3 feet and I have only surfed it when it was head high once or twice, and I've been surfing here for like 5 years. That being said some of the students there are really talented surfers. So i would agree with the people above and say check out some California schools more.

you seem.... a tad naive to this whole process. What do you want to major? What exactly is is GPA? SATS? ACT? $ situation? Nonetheless, if possible, I'd say go to a school in California. I go to UNCW, I love it. I transferred in after spending a miserable year in a college in PA, and now i'm living beach front for the upcoming semester (ta daaa, cheap too actually). Everyone kinda shreds here for the most part, and I'm gonna say WB is the best surf town on the EC. The school itself is killer, the campus, girls, academics (except for the crazed liberal english dept and administration, but what school isn't like that?) especially the sciences and business (which i am currently killin it in). I could go on, but i don't feel like typing right now.

I do that 1 bit of advice; Do not go to Hawaii. It's a death pit. It's almost too perfect. I know 2 people that went there for college and they are completely different now. I dont know if its a coincidence or what, but the drugs, culture and vibe is different as a student rather as a visiter.

I would have gone to California if I could, but money and the fact that my parents who are helping me pay for college wouldn't let me.

I moved to San Diego (Pacific Beach originally, now in Mission Beach) a year ago.

This place is PARADISE. Hot chicks everywhere & waves are always rideable. Dont settle for somewhere you will be misearble (east coast). You can honestly apply to university of phoenix and do online classes from your porch facing the beach.

I know people from Ivy league's that cant find a job and guys that never went to college that have a phenominal career and great pay. It's all about how much effort YOU put into your own education and future.

But like I said if you're miserable always thinking about surf - you will never get anywhere. Find out where you will be happiest (geographically) and move forward from there.

Edit - Check Mesa Community College in SD county. Get your residency in 1 year or even get your AA then transfer to SDSU and get in state tuition. Any idiot that jumps right into a 4 year school at $30-$50K a year is a fool and shouldnt be crying about ridiculous student loans. Most people say a car or a home is your biggest purchase. Im going to go ahead and say college is. Do all of your research

I'm bumping this. I chose academics over staying local and landed in central VA, for college. Being so close to the mountains, I experienced the mountain life. I never got into skiing/snowboarding, but mountain biking was a blast. Every break, I would get more out of my surfing sessions than before. When I moved back to Wilmington, I had a totally new perspective on surfing.

i've already spent some time away from the coast and i'm definitely not looking to do that again... totally sucks but it does increase your appreciation for surfing. and regarding the guy that says hawaii is a "death pit". if there is any truth to this can someone please elaborate?

also, would it make more sense to live in CA for a year to get residency, then go to 4 year college, or do 2 years of community college there first? are there financial benefits for doing 2 years of community over there?

To elaborate a bit more on Hawaii, I went there a year ago for work. I worked a week in Honolulu and vacationed a week on Kauai. I have nothing against anyone from HI or anything, but what the folks above mentioned is true. Drugs are everywhere and (at least in Honolulu) it is not the nicest place in the world and definitely not somewhere I'd want to live. And if you think localism is bad where you live.... Most folks over there are not fond of mainlanders. Kauai was much more laid back, but I don't think you'll find a big name university there. And as I mentioned earlier, everything is insanely expensive and you are a long way from home (If you're from LI, you'd likely take American out of JFK, connect in either DFW or LAX and you're talking 12-16 hours of flying to get home).

Lots of meth and pills (oxy) in Hawaii. Earlier this year a friend of the family who I watched grow up (I'm over 10 years older) was killed riding his bike in a hit-and-run near the campus. They later found the driver cranked out of her mind. She has multiple drug and vehicle past offenses, yet she still found it in herself to plow over this young man and cut his life horribly short.

Read up on the stories of Da Hui or just google "Hawaii" and "crystal meth."

regarding honolulu, every day on the news it seems: something burns down and/or someone gets killed by hit and run. Depending on what your major is you could look into one of the UH satellite campuses like UH Hilo...
Personally, I don't know that I'd necessarily base my academic and professional future on going to school where the best waves are.

Either way is a smart route. IF you do a year at mesa college, get your residency then transfer your credits they may not ALL be accepted, but you cut the 4 year university's bill down substantially due to you being a "resident".

On the other hand if you complete an associates degree at mesa CC (1.5 - 2 years depending on course load), most state schools will honor that degree and you can pick up right where you left off.

Find out where you want to eventually go, tell an advisor your plan and see what they say.

denali parkway? highway to yakutat? uaa best? not too sure what you're talking about here. never heard of the denali parkway and there are no roads to yakutat - access is by plane or boat only. if you drove, you didn't get there...uaf (fairbanks) is the flagship of the ua system but obviously not a surf school if you check a map. uaa (anchorage) is a couple of years removed from being a community college, but anchorage isn't a bad place to be for surf (and big mountain) access because you can get short flights to kodiak, yakutat, etc. (the best breaks in ak are only accessible by plane or boat). the only decent surf you can get to on the road system is out on the kenai peninsula. there are a couple of community college branches on the kp - one in kenai and one down in homer. homer/anchor point probably has the best road access surf in ak (3+ hour drive from anch) - regularly fun, but rarely epic. boat trips and/or short flights are required to really score up here. camping on homer spit last week: IMG_1786.jpg IMG_1665.jpg

How's it hanging up there, cresto? Sounds like I definitey botched the whole AK thing up. It's been more than 10 years since I was up there, so please excuse my lack of direction. We took a sea plane somewhere, but I don't remember exactly where we went. I didn't think it was Yakutat, but I could be wrong.

I visited a few schools when I was up there and UAA seemed to be pretty legit. I didn't look into the school's curriculum and history, but I would much rather be in Anchorage than Fairbanks. Schooling aside, Ketchikan is my favorite city. I spotted a massive shark tooth - megalodon? - from a footbridge, but I couldn't find a way to climb down. I still think about that tooth....

You've got some beautiful country up there, cresto. Next time you're in Juneau, grab a Freeride for me at Red Dog Saloon.

I would go to California. I had a great time at UNCW but outside of surfers and nc, people will look at your resume with a confused look on their face. Sure it's gotten harder to get into but it's still school at the beach, which doesn't create a great academic environment. Good waves are maybe twice a month and it gets crowded. I live in NYC now and although it gets good occasionally, it still has the typical east coast problems. Knee high short period wind swell is the norm unless you've got a hurricane or nor'easter. Lot of guys get off surfing in 35 water with snow on the beach and 30 mph offshore winds. That's cool but California on an average day is as good and you won't be in a survival situation.

Try northern mich univ. in Marquette. Da U P eh. Storm surfing in the bay is awesome. Ya think jersey is cold not even close. Bring a 5mm suit. There is no line ups to wait in and no sharks, just sea cows.

I'll make a deal to the UNCW students who want to rent a room: $5,000/month. That way I can ensure it will be some rich kid from the Northeast. I know I'll get it because I'll sell the idea to their folks like it's a status symbol--they always fall for that.

You can also sell yourself as their personal manservant. Call yourself Cadbury. Sheet, rent out a few rooms(build them if you have to), and you could make this your new career.

    Sell packages.

5,000/month gets them basic shelter(their own room and limited kitchen access) and breakfast. A safe place to drink, and slight suggestions as to the best local sandbars.

7,500/month....Shelter, breakfast and dinner, one night's cab service to that decadent bar youse guys have down there, and they get to surf with you

10,000/month(The Greenwich, CT Plan) gets shelter, breakfast, sack lunch, and dinner. Full Cadbury manservant service with all whims and desires catered to(nothing sexual). 10 free waves at Masonboro per month and liquor buying services for those under-21. Package also includes: One Polo Golf Shirt; two pairs of Abercrombie shorts, and a Hollister sweatshirt for those nippy fall evenings. And a pair of penny loafers available for rent.

Wow, you might have something here..

Aww smack, dude, I'm going to look up that county jail of yours and send her a letter(Jenelle). Or is she in prison?

Yes, I'm dead serious. Man, maybe, just maybe, she'd come live with me after she gets out. That would be awesome. Ok I have some research to do.........

Solid business plan, but does the 10k plan offer get-out-of-jail-free card? If so, that would be ideal. You know how those rich boys like getting into trouble on their parents dime
