If anyone has a leftover piece about a foot square i could use to make a handplane, please let me know. (or any wood suitable for a handplane) Will pay. Cant find small quanities online and the local big box stores only have pine, oak, etc.
I actually got my students to bring me some old decks for that purpose after watching a video. Got an original old school Powell Caballero from one. Crappy shape, but would have looked cool .
Yeah postage isn't much but if your handplane blanks are like your boards the blank will run ya $100,000 right?
Ziiiiiiiing! Exit, take Clemson's advice--any decent wood will do. Go check your local exotic wood supplier to see if they have some cutoffs they can toss your way.
Poplar is a cheap, easy to find substitute that works well for handplanes. You can get a piece big enough for two planes from Home Depot or Lowes for under $10.
I loved my old red Caballero. Don't turn it into a handplane. That is a sick deck little shorter and wider than the others at the time, perfect concave, short tail, great for ollies... That board and the original Gonzales in light blue were my faves.
