I had one but wore it to slide in and out of my wetsuit. kinda looked like a dance skin. the bad thing was that once the wet suit was off, It made you colder than being nekkid.
Dude in my lobstering days they'd be thick out by our gear this time of year, just huge schools of them, lion's mane jellyfish by the hundreds. Anyway, we'd pull 10 pot trawls, and as the pots would come up they'd go right through the thick of these things. Still half asleep so Ill get to my point...tentacles and jelly bits would be flying off the line coming through the hauler, and pretty regularly myself(I worked the rail) and the Capt would take stings directly to the eye. And it was funny b/c you knew it happened instantaneously...sharp stinging pain in the eye which would travel back into the sinus cavity, eyes watering like never before, followed by a minute long sneezing fit. Ironically, after the sneezing the pain would go away, kinda like dmt, extremely intense immediately, then gone within a couple minutes. Just thought i'd share that w/ you fellers. Be good and enjoy your day
Can't say since this is my first year in the Low Country, but damn, when I was out last monday, I got stung probably 3 times in a 2 hours session. My friend who I was teaching how to surf got nailed probably 5-6 times. It was crazy, I saw a bunch of HUGE, dead jellies on the beach, but I never saw any in the water, I just got out and had serious stinging rashes. Big one on my chest. But there are vinegar waters hanging up like every 10 feet by the city of Hilton Head on every public beach. It was just weird how when I was in the water, the whole lineup was talking about getting stung every 5 minutes but I never saw the bastards.
Yeah, I need to get a rash guard. I just have a 2 mil jacket, but its too damn hot in the water to wear that thing. If i through 2 mil on in 86 degree water, heat exhausting will be a much more pressing issue than the jellies. Damn things.
The Safe Sea lotion is thick and works if you apply it ahead of time. I like to have Benedryl cream in my backpack, if not for my self, usually some little kid will get nailed and needs it asap. Especially man o war, they need to be tended to immediately. Meat tenderizer is good too, especially if you can find Harris liquid meat tenderizer. It is made with papain, which is papaya extract, which breaks down amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein. The sting also contains amino acids, so the meat tenderizer is effective if applied right away. All this stuff is expensive. Vinegar is cheap, but not as effective. That is why the lifeguards usually have vinegar diluted in water. A friend of mine bought a sea lice repellant wet suit, and when he tried it out ( during an ESA contest no less ) it filled up with so much water he almost drowned. I have never seen it since.
Yo, is this your new gig? Offerring the standard hypothetical "douchebag" reponse? So, non-douches would say, "Hey, humans deserve to swim safely. We need to eradicate all sealife that can cause us harm or temporary discomfort?" Hey, do you live in Williamsburg? Are you wearing a wool beenie right now? Mr. Brewengineer, here is a real douchebag response, brought to you by one of New Jersey's premiere douchebags. Urinate in your bathtube before going for a shred. Invite your neighbors to relieve themselves in the tub. Get a lot of it. Then soak in the tub for twenty minutes..... I promise you won't get stung by any jellyfish. Ha Ha, you southern guys have to surf in non-polluted waters with a whole bunch of sealife. LOL LOL Ha, New Jersey's waters are dead and chocolate. LOL Man, you guys are so pristine and behind the times.
It's all the rain you/we've been getting. Those little nettle jellies just love them some brackish water. Meat tenderizer all the way.
most the ones you see washed up are cannon balls which dont sting and moon jellys which dont really hurt, idk the bad ones which i never see only get stung by are the sea wasps you wont normally see them washed up. wait till you get hit by a man o war youll want to leave the water for a month.
Yeah, the canon ball jellies are actually a delicacy in Asia. Rather harmless. I hear the sea nettles are bad. I am not sure what hit me, but I have some nice rashes. I will try the meat tenderizer next time.
I don't know where you're located but this year hasn't been to bad up north... I've had times where everytime I check I've got the small ones on my suit and in my hands. I just use aloe if there too bad, but most of the time I just try to weigh the pleasure I get from surfing above the stings from jellyfish and the chance of getting a shark taking one of my legs lol.
Wow, you sure are sensitive. That must be a soul surfer thing. I was just poking at Fitz, in case you missed the net humor. Who is crying? Are you crying, young soul surfer?
They are worse than I have ever seen them in SC. I haven't been stung more than a couple times in the last 5 years here. However, to be hit non stop in a short period of time seems rather odd. My buddy who has surfed this area for 20 years has also commented that it has been a bad year (or specifically a bad August). I wasn't aware that we weren't supposed to discuss any ocean sea life activity on here.
yeah oddly enough i herd something about a company wanted to start up around hear to catch them all and sell them to Asian countries, they come in huge blooms you know and usually have other unfriendly jellies with them, i ran into a bloom today thats when the arms and legs go sky high and i just drift by.
