He could have ridden it as many times as he liked but in fact took it out only once and rode 6 waves, he fell off on most of them. That's correct. It takes a little longer than that to adjust to the board, as is often the case when moving to a new design. look at how many threads there are on how to ride a mini sim for example... many people struggle at first but persevere because they want to learn how to do it. Randy didn't persevere. That's right. You should have seen the written review, it was scathing and as I said stated that the board would go better if cut in half. Really considering his influential position Rarick did not do the decent thing by judging the board without having learnt to ride it properly. .
I said 'anyway' but was quoted as using the Americanism 'anyways'. Please read more carefully. I gave permission for Randy to ride the board after he requested the ride. I did not ask him to ride the board as claimed here. There is no contradiction.
This is what you said, once again. YOU read more carefully, seeing as you can't even reconcile your own statements, I will keep posting your quotes until you do. You can't let someone do something if you didn't have knowledge of them wanting to do so beforehand. He took it upon himself to ride the board... THAT is what happened. So just say that next time, don't insult him by telling everybody in the world that you LET HIM do anything, that's just wrong. You don't own him and you aren't capable letting him do a thing.
You are wrong again. Randy needed my permission to ride the board, and I gave it after he asked to ride it. That's how the tour worked... the caretaker of the board would contact me saying that a particular person would like to have the board and ride it. Randy contacted the caretaker and asked him if he could ride the board, display it at the pipeline masters, and have several pro surfers ride it at pipeline during the event. I granted permission through the intermediary of the caretaker. That is not the same as asking randy to ride the board, which I didn't do. You are 'flogging a dead horse' by trying to find any contradiction there. There isn't any.
I started using the term 'pure surfing' many years ago and this is what I meant by it: Surfing stripped to essentials. Of course you can use the term to mean anything you like, I don't own it. .
Stop changing your story to fit your argument. You can't go back and add more info to justify your contradiction. You knew nothing of him riding your board until well after the fact, this you made clear. Just admit it, you're wrong, it's ok, it isn't the first and certainly won't be the last.
Video interlude, the 12-9 'Makaha' at the point:
I have never 'changed my story' and the facts are as stated, I received a message from the caretaker of the board that randy wanted to ride it, display it at the pipeline masters and have some pro surfers ride it during the event. I granted permission for him to do so... thus he did not ride the board 'at my request' as someone stated on this thread, and yes I did 'let' him ride the board as I had the power to veto it.. as I had throughout the board tour. .
Based on post count it's you and Charlie against the rest. Charlie and Roy 289 posts for Roy's prices Rest of the forum 476 posts against Roy's prices You lose!
Actually za gaffer I like what you have said to me. I curently am a sufer of Malbu shapes and I also have some mini long boardes and and a few woodies I have experimented with. I have been surfing since I was 13, I am 24 now. I am certainly not from the worlds hot spot of surfing either, I would probably get crushed in whatever triple over head mavericks stuff you probably charge on short boards. But any how my statement regarding pure surfing is to my understanding a style of surfing which doesn't require board walking nor do any of the menuvers compliment high scores in a compition. I have always liked to surf fast and well controlled, I deal with allot of close out conditions from time to time where I'm from given the spot and the day ofcource so making it before the close out is always nice. I find that Roy's boards are very unique and beautiful and good for speed. I'm a better surfer than a surfboard shaper to be perfectly clear. I've taken interest in Building Roy's boards recently, prior to me knowing about Roy I was using other wooden boards built by local shapers in my area and have always loved the carpenters surfing experience. A carpenter has the ability to make a cool surfboard from wood which is unique and special. As for pure surfing I guess any style which makes you grin like a fool and feel incredibly stoked is pure enough for me.
And now for some comic relief for this unending dispute .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-k5J4RxQdE
ZA Gaffer: Thanks for occasionally interjecting something worth reading and thinking about in the middle of this horrid thread. "pure"...really? I'm always surprised how often the term "soul" is connected with certain types of surfing, as though other kinds of surfing objectively lack soul. Still hanging on the edge of my chair to find out the resolution to whether Randy Rarick did, or did not, have advance permission to test Roy's board with Roy's awareness. I've been wondering about that for years.
^+1. Definitely a very good thought. In the guild of beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, which is in harmony with zaGaffer's post.
When I used the term pure surfing in regard to Roy's designs I am using it to simply imply that the olo style long board which it is doesn't do anything fancy other than surf efficiently from a sweet spot riding position. It's only designed to surf, not nose walk, smack lips, launch airs, or make excessive spray wih hard turning menuvers. So it's not to belittle anyone's feelings towards what's pure for them it's just a simplified style is all.
wouldn't it be a lot smarter for you to market these for a modest $25000-$35000 compared to the incomprehensible 1.4 million? Youre profit margins would still be huge and you could channel far more sales I would say, no?
