Going to there for a week in December and wondering what the waves are typically like? I know it's flat compared to summer but are we talking so small you need one of the 12 foot beginner boards or more like knee high with a decent interval?
Thanks jrs. I lived in Ewa Beach as a Kehei so I know finding waves is no problem. Never went to Waikiki as a kid... too crowded and expensive. If I have time I'll go to Sandys for some bodysurfing but am hoping to get some waves on a board too. I don't mind small waves as long as they have some energy.
Seems to me there is just about always a knee to waist high longboard wave in Waikiki. Check Queens, Publics, etc. But why worry about small waves in Waikiki? Take the drive to the north shore. You'll find all the energy you need up there in December.
Thanks stinkbug. The North Shore might have a little too much energy and be super crowded with pros and local bad asses in December. I will just have to watch the forecast. I might go to Chun's if the swell isn't too big. I really just need a local to show me some stuff. Maybe if I offer to pay for gas, beer and some grind I can get a tour.
Hey brah you know that generally it's north swells in the winter... But I remember some fun times at ala moana that time of year!!! Yet on the other hand - the whole place can go flat... Or you could score head hi Fun waves on the north shore- it's not always huge... There are tons of maps you can find with all the surf spots- if you see a spot and it looks good- just go out and have fun and be Respectable- ppl there are a lot cooler then here! Man... I'm stoked for you!!!!! Get out there and surf!!!!
Everywhere from Diamond Head to Kawalo Basin can be worthy that time of year, but you will get far more waves if your willing to put a bigger board under your feet. Thats just the nature of the Waikiki area. Town is really hit or miss, but as others have said, the North Shore is practically guaranteed. There are lots of spots between Haleiwa up to Pipe, that aren't nearly as dominated or crowded. Chun's, Jocko's, shoot, even Sunset can be sparse with people, given good timing. One time I was up there and it seemed like everyone and their mother was trying to find somewhere that wasn't blown out, including my friend and me, but every time we took a pass by Waimea, Pinballs was clean and glassy. Finally I talked my friend into paddling out, and we shared glassy 15' + perfection with two other guys. There are plenty of spots that are not overrun with Pros. In fact in some cases, its the 15-year-old girls that will be your greatest wave hog threat over and above the hoards of Brazilians. Good luck and have fun. I can honestly say I'm a little jealous.
thisguysthumbs is right man.... there are so many other spots you can hit. Hell you could even skip over to another island! Some of the other islands won't be as crowded. There will definitely be waves though. People too!
As long as I get something big enough to have some energy but smaller than head high I'll be happy. Sounds like I'll be good to go. Just a little anxious cause I want to make the most of my time.
I'm stoked for sure. Can't wait for the warm water. In Washington the closest spot is 3 hours away, 45-55F water, a long paddle out with strong currents and no channel for paddling out. At least we get surf. It may be huge and blown out but a lot but its never flat.
Bro if that's what your looking for- and everywhere is flat or too small- diamond head usually has a chest hi wave- plus an easy channel to paddle out. Fun and easy waves. Just get on it early- before the crowds and the winds...
ya bro- a lot of ppl go there and its not really a 'local' place... the waves are fun and mellow... I have had some great and memorable sessions there!
Dont worry just have fun. Please tell me about the hotels or resorts that you might have booked. Since i am planning for a second honeymoon in waikiki. Let me know as soon as possible and try before end of january.
Hey i agree waikiki is very expensive. I went there in August and It really cost me a bomb. Instead of enjoying i was more worried about my expenses.
