I'm getting my daughter her first board and I'd appreciate any input on size/design. She is 15 115lbs 5'4"...just learning to surf , she can paddle and catch small florida waves with my 7'4" funboard but cant paddle it very well. She surfed my 6'3" rocket hybrid and felt it was a little too small. Thanks fellow surfers!
At her size I would go with that size funboard or something bigger, but not over 8' because I think it would be hard for her to handle in the water
agreed with Zman.. but i do have friends that are hardcore shortboard or hardcore longboarders only.. personally i like to think of myself as a waterman.. i ride the board that the waves dictate. if its small and mushy i'll ride my 9'6, or even a soft top, if it's big and throwing i'll ride my 5'10 and everything in between. That being said, for a first board, for a young girl that is learning, i think a fun board is probably the best bet cause she can surf tiny florida waves when its ankle high, and she can still survive if its head high. once she gets the feel for it it will be up to her wether to move up to a longer board, move to a short board, or to expand her quiver to allow to ride the kind of board the waves are telling her to ride.
oh, and no one can paddle well when they first start surfing! i prefer surfing head high on a fish or shortboard, but when i lived in florida 70% of the surfing i did was on an 8'0 costco soft top board because the waves were just not enough to short board. the costco boards are great cause they're $100 and you can use them with the whole family and not worry about anyone taking a rail to the face, i still have 2 of them in my quiver for when my gf and her friends wanna surf!

If she surfs it all the time, she's eventually going to acclimate to whatever you get her. However, for a beginner wanting to learn to shortboard in FL, I'd go the eggy, flat rocker/round nose route. They're very stable for their size, easier to paddle than any other type shortboard and glide well without "pumping " for speed. Everybody makes these style boards (Lost "Couch Potato", Quiet Flight "Pylon", Neilson "Blunt", Fluid "Spud", etc), so you can find the most local shaper and probably get the best deal
I didnt want to have to make a new thread but i wanted to ask you guys for help about my own board and what i should get next. ive been surfing for a few years, and ive been riding a 5'7 x 19'' x 2 3/8 motor boat too for a year now and last week i ordered a 5'4 chemistry disk 2 for smaller surf like 1-4 feet instead of using the motor boat too for an all around board. Until the other day my motor boat too snapped. now im looking for another new board to get for bigger surf. Im 17 years old 5'6 135 lb Surf Ny/Nj and im looking to either get a DFR, Fred Rubble or even a new motor boat too(which i kinda liked but my friend said it was too loose). i want to know what would be a good combo with the disk 2 for my height and weight to get for chest - overhead surf.or maybe a recommendation for a different board that you guys think would fit me good and what measurements to get. Thanks
If you liked the motor boat stick with it. Just cause your friend said it was too loose doesn't mean anything. It's all about how you liked it. everyone has different opinions. But it's always good to try new stuff. If you want a really fun all arounder check out a new flyer. Perfect jersey/ny board
i do like the motor boat too but im looking for more advice maybe someone can recommend a different board or tell me what kind of board they think would fit me good and which i should look into much more for when my small wave board won't work well in chest - overhead winter swells, maybe a review on the DFR/Fred rubble or a review on a different more performance board
Yeah, a CI Flyer about 5'6" should get you into anything from waist to overhead, and is very maneuverable and fast. But...if you can find a local shaper that makes high performance boards for groms and junior shredders, you will have a great custom board and you will get to learn what tail shapes, thickness, rails, and bottom contours work best for your style of surfing at your favorite breaks. Plus you will save about $200 in the process.

Honestly man, go with a new flyer, or like the other guy said talk to a shaper about making something similar to the flyer but a little more dialed into what you like. It'll most likely come out to be a great choice that you won't regret. Supporting your local shaper in the process is always a plus. He's riding the same waves you ride so he has the knowledge and advice on how to get you dialed into exactly what you're looking for.
