Thank you brewengineer for the link to the Thule Hang Two Surf Carrier. Nice product at a very good price. Does anyone know of any locking rack systems to prevent theft?
am i the only one who ever had a bar of sticky bumps permanently welded/melted into the glovebox?a few years ago during summer id wax the board up and throw the rest into the glovebox.then one day i went to retrive it and it was impossible.i sold the car with the wax intact.also the trunk of the car had wax molded to it from years of layin the board down.sun + wax doesnt add up.or u get to the beach with a board with old wax,lay it down and sit there for 15 minutes and before u paddle out,u can literally take a finger to the board and the wax comes right off.thats why i started waxing my chest.i never strapped a board to the roof,id usually have the nose stick out the sunroof.i remember one day early june since it was the day of my nephews birthday,i went for a sesh before heading over to my brothers, driven, board stickin out the roof,i had this girls number written on a napkin,i put the window down for a smoke, and i remember watchin the napkin go airborne, and im like no no no no no lol,and it flys right out the window.that was before everybody had cellphones.
This is a damned interesting point. I'm totally torn. I'm just gonna strap it to the roof sideways, fins up. For clarification, that picture is not me. This is me:
if you think about it when a board is wax side down its like an airplane wing creating lift, and when it fins in front its like a backwards weather vane so it will want to turn around and go with the wind. so i must conclude logically that fins back, wax side up is the best way aerodynamically speaking. you would need some sort of board tampon on top to prevent the wax from melting.......not kooky at all.
i love when i drop deep and someone drops in on my wave. does it really kill someone to look both ways.
Brah, I got wax molded to the middle seat in my truck and it's the schitt. There is wax all over my tailgate from leaning the deck of sticks up against it. Wax and sand are everywhere in my vehicles and crib and on my clothes and usually skin. I do make sure to put open bars in ziploc bags or similar because it can get real bad like you describe. Wax is awesome though man. I picked up Sex Wax chapstick at the board shop in SD last week and rocking that now. Tastes like wax smells, never thought I'd be so lucky.
My sticks is kept nice in the bed of my truck with the hard cover. Locked up nice and secure too. My 7'7 fits perfect at a 45 and I could damn near put my whole quiver in the bed at once. No room for a wrong board in a short bed but I don't set foot on those. I know you brahs aren't about to ditch your whip to go get a pickup but if you're making a change soon, strongly consider this.
I'm not totally against the hat thing. There are a couple on the market that are even trucker style and don't look terrible if you can get past the chin strap thing. Then again, hooded caps also have chin straps and honestly, a hooded cap is 1000x more stiff looking than a ball cap or trucker hat. Not even close. Saw several cats in ES wearing them last month and they could rip. Believe I saw a cap or two in SoCal last week also. They're out there. If you are in shape and are surfing well, I can't see a hat making you look any worse. After all, are we out there in the lineup with the purpose of scoring dates? Only when it's Lake Atlantic and a wahine paddles next to you. I've scored digits in those instances by remembering them til I hit land, but that's for schitts and giggles when there's literally no surf out there and you can't achieve your primary objective of charging and need other means of stoke.
That's all good. You do what you want and ignore physics and aerodynamics. If being a kook means I use my brain and don't just follow the other sheep, then I would prefer to be a kook.
A proper water hat to prevent sunburn and skin cancer is one thing, a trucker hat in the water to look cool is a whole different story. And I even wear a 'trucker hat' on land, sometimes they're the only hats that actually fit my head.
carloads of boards headed to the beach on flat, sideshore summer days. full suits in august the little perfect square of wax on your shortboard people that load up their board with stickers but are not sponsored. In my opinion, that is the ultimate in "Poseur". Hats don't usually bother me, though stereotypes are sometimes based on reality, often the only guy out there being a huge kook (blatanty cutting people off) will be the one guy in a little hat... Bobbing around on your $700 shortboard talking about how it's not really rideable while I am logging my brains out. it's all about having fun out there. Do these things and you will still have fun, I'll just have a little at your expense.
Brah, was pointing out that they've got a variety of water hats that aren't fashion prohibitive. No one's topping the food chain of style wearing any hat in the water, so throwing a hat on to look cool will both be a failure and a misfire on why the hat should be worn. My point was to support the skin cancer prevention and say there's some different options out there for those who are otherwise putting appearances before function. Schitt, now I gotta go and see if SurfOutlet.com will take back the dozen trucker water hats that just arrived pony express... Agree on Erock's "bee hat" statement. Full protection is best. You got a big melon SS? I'm a 7 5/8 but I couldn't believe it when I saw a dude in Lids one time that was an 8 1/8. Talk about circumference.
I got some awesome shots of my son surfing in a full brim safari hat and a collared button up dress shirt. He forgot sunscreen and his rash guard but the waves were firing. Before anyone says how could he forget those things and remember his board, he didn't bring his board; he stole mine while I was taking a break.
Had one, have a Tahoe now, much more comfortable and can fit my LB inside if needed, which on occasion i'm lazy and don't feel like using the straps, miss the truck though, probably get another one day
