locals vs pros

Personally, if I paid out of my own pocket to travel to Tahitit, I would go for every wave possible.

Good thing for you, if you traveled to Tahitit it wouldn't be on your own dime so you could be a selective mothertrucker for the waves you charged.

Both videos had elements of the absurd, Wassel's for the knife waving and John's for the gratuitous shark riding. After hearing both sides I tend to agree with the locals, but I wonder why in a lineup surrounded by his friends John needed a ride on the ski? Nobody else bothered to help him get in?

 

They were the only ones on the inside. Nobody else probably even knew what was going on. Should have hitched a ride with one of his shark friends! On that note... I'd hate to piss off a guy in the line-up that has sharks for friends!

 

What do we tell kooks? What do we always tell them no matter what?

Are you guys kidding me? Dave Wassel was totally right. It doesn't matter who feels like what, especially if its that massive. I don't care where your from if you put others at risk your totally wrong. If some guy who I've never seen before come to a beach I surf often and is getting absolutely slotted I hoot him I don't drop in on him purposefully. The whole thing is kooky. Wassel did nothing to instigate other than catch a SICK barrel, not a crime.

 

The problem with what Wassel was doing, was that he and the other ski guys were catching all the waves way before any of the local dudes even had a CHANCE to catch the waves. The guy said he hadn't caught a wave after an hour of sitting in the line up. You're saying that if you were waiting in the water for an hour without a wave, you would hoot the guy who was getting towed in before you even had a shot? Fat chance

 

I didn't think the Tahitian video was gratuitous, it was a response to show their side of the story. The shark riding was meant to show them as a group who are in tune with the animals in their environment, in contrast to the tone in Wassel's video where his role is to consume, depicting him as some kind of an apex predator/alpha dog or whatever of the ocean.

We don't really know any of these guys, but Wassel really comes off as a talking turd. We'll wait for his apology (appeal to be allowed to come back to Tahiti)

Took John 45 min to paddle out to the lineup then waits over an hour for a wave because of all the tow guys. I'd go too. Imagine if you got to the beach after leaving work early, start paddling out at 3:00, now its 4:45 and you still haven't caught a wave b/c you're too nice to screw up anyone's wave. What's he going to do, sit there til dark? It's not like he could paddle a block over to the next peak.

And the whole wasslehoff video was just plain disrespectful. Hope he gets his sh!t jacked next time he's there.

 

I agree where you are coming from, I feel like in some sense, it was completely out of line what John did. He seriously put himself in danger, as well as Wassle. That situation could have turned out A LOT worse than it did. On the other hand, it really sucks because these local guys don't have the money to fly wherever they want to and surf the best waves on the planet at any time. They are grounded on this one island for the most part and wait all year for a swell like this. These pros fly in for a weekend, score all the best waves, jet into the bombs before anyone has a shot, then leave.

 

Wow. If you just saw the original video of what happened, John looked clearly in the wrong. BUT the posted local rules specify different rules on dropping in. Are surf rules universal?? I'd say maybe not... "The deeper surfer does not have priority... Wait your turn!"

After watching both video responses, it's clear: Dave is a d1ck, such a d1ck. John followed the posted local rules, though endangering himself and another. I still can't believe the ski driver left him there. Karma's coming after that guy too.

The reason Wassel is a di*k is because he knows better. Look at where he comes from. He was or is lifeguard on the North Shore!
If me and my friends went to Pipe and wanted to get every wave, because we had a ski, do you think the locals would just let me go? It doesn't matter how hard you rip, they will drop in on you. Why are the rules different at his home?

 

there is no law in ny that requires someone to help someone else. at the same time there is a good samaritan law that protects you from wrong doing if you try to help someone and that person is further injured during your assistance.... I think.

 

one would think that the locals in the lineup would have tried saying something but maybe the tow in dbag crew was so far outside and after the waves they were immediately picked up by the skiis that there was no opportunity for anyone to have a discussion. Wassel and crew being (intentionally?) clueless about the boiling tempers on the inside and the locals having no other recourse than to drop in... it was dangerous but I think hard to blame the sponger.

 

Sunny Garcia and many other Hawaiians have been run out of San Diego county for 15 years cause of this. Sunny talks a lot of sh** but a bunch of California gringos slapped those guys up an sent them packing. To this day they aren't welcome. Maybe he could get a few waves as tourmaline or something, but he gets burnt an escorted out of every decent spot from the OB jetty, to wind n sea, to all the LJ reefs, to blacks to Swamis.

So no matter who u are or where you are from, it's up to the locals in the community to regulate. It's a team effort. From burning guys every time, with everyone on board to getting out of the water a mobbing someone if they try and step to a local for doing it.

I don't ever start trouble but I have come to the aid of dozens of locals in San Diego as we burn brazillians and escort them out as a large group for not playing by the rules. The second we would see the drop and and argument ensue, we would assist the other locals like a swarm of bees
