Looking for a 2nd crib as I head into my golden surfing years what location would you choose. I'm thinking PR cause of the warmth but already have property in the Wilmington NC area I bought in the late 80's.. Currently reside in Dirty Jersey :)

Great choice to have. How about renting in PR for awhile before you decide?

For some reason, this comes to mind: The guy from the FuelTV surfing show, Shayne McIntire, resides in PR with his family. He's from SoCal. Must be pretty good waves & pretty good living in PR if a global surf traveler picked that as his settle-down spot.

Really? "Warmth" is the reason you would opt for Puerto Rico over Wilmington? I cant put my finger on it, but I think there might be something more.

If you need someone to take care of/move into your place in Wilmington then I'm your guy. Don't have any money but I will totally keep the robbers away.

The only thing with PR is the off season probably no rental income whatsoever. Not interested in Rincon to expensive thinking Ramey Base.
Wilmington has a lot more to offer socially if you get what I'm saying and surely is a nice place to live. PR is a good place to visit and catch good waves but would not want to live there Year round.. When it's flat it's torture.. I have a friend who's been there the last 6 years he can't come back to the states.. LOL! Could be worse.

He sure does. He lives up on a hill above one of the breaks in Aguadilla. I hung out with him and his family 4 years ago and they are awesome. I highly recommend living in Aguadilla over Rincon. Just remember it's not very consistent there and is typically only good during our winters.

If you go you should shoot him and e-mail and see if he has time to meet up and get a quick surf in.

I'm sure there's someone in PR right now on a forum talking about retiring in Wilmington but they have property in PR. Wouldn't be hard at all to find someone who would want to trade properties.

Course if it were me I would sell the property and retire in Indo! Your money will go way farther! Year round surf and nice warm water! Warm water and waves is the most important thing! I don't think I could retire in a place that gets below 70 degrees!

There are more than several places in the world with first-rate health care, in fact better health care then here in the States; and a lot less expensive than here in the United States of Gouge.

In fact, the USA routinely ranks pretty poorly in global rankings of health care systems. For example, WHO rated the USA in 35th slot.

Tellin' ya mon, the best years of this country are behind us, and we're sliding down a slippery slope where democracy goes out the window.

I have two kids, my daughter just started going to Salisbury MD for college, my son 16 still in HS so I could not leave to the south pacific.. The only other thing that worries me about PR

    http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2013/10/07/worsening-debt-crisis-threatens-puerto-rico/?_r=0

$23 K worth of debt for every person on the island.. kind of scary. Unless of course they become a state! I've been there over 40 times in the last 30 years sure I wish I bought back in the late 80's but who knew :) .. What about Northern FLA never been any good? say Palm Beach..

I lived in north Fla in Jax beach but it's changed since I was there in the early eighties. I always liked going to ST. Augustine for a change of pace and liked it. I live In Wilmington now and the winters can be cold. I would rather live in Carolina Beach just south of here if I had my way...Wrightsville beach, the beach at Wilmington is a can of worms...IMO

I actually met him down there with his family a few years back... He ripped, his wife was cool and his 3-4 year old fishing by the rocks. Seemed like a cool dude.

It's a good spot because the waves are good (sometimes great), most speak English and it's tropical.

    Yes, of course.

But that's like comparing The Mayo Clinic with Wiregrass Medical Center in Geneva, Alabama.

BTW, just in case anyone is in total awe of USA medical care:
"Hospital errors are responsible for 146,000 deaths per year, and 400 per day, in America."

PR is my vote. Even in the 'flat' summer there are waves to be had on the north and eastern shores. San Juan gets super good. Wilmington in summer, winter in PR - not a bad trade-off

You'd really enjoy North or Central FL, but lots of people retire here, i'd pick PR if it were me, hands down, but I live here so I would want a change of pace

Why not rent out the property in wilmington, use the extra/freed up money to hang around pr, if you get sick of pr leave, go somewhere else?

I agree with whoever mentioned St. Augustine, lived there for quite some time, really enjoyed it... and its cheap. Then again its a younger town, and areas are kinda crazy sometimes.

I vote pr. I think jacksonville, st. Augustine might be cool. My aunt lives there. Seems like a cool place.
