military bases and surf potential

I think there's some base.....airforce?.......out in Central California that has a killer beachbreak........

Wrightstown, by Fort Dix in Jersey has crack and it's an hour away from LBI which will make you love the east coast all over again. You can be buds with Mr. Sniffer.

 

Just make sure you're sober before talking to a recruiter or a detailer.

 

wasnt there a fatal attack in 2010 in the fall? and maaaad shark sightings at that place, its got a reputation

Dude, I was stationed in camp Pendleton and I surfed maybe a handful of times in 5 years. As a marine living between Oceanside and san Clemente I rarely had time or the opportunity to surf. But after i finished my active duty i surfed a week straight in del mar, then came home to jersey and had to face life after realizing i had some issues from combat. If you're thinking about joining,surf spots shouldn't really be on your radar, youl have bigger things to deal with. And if you join the corps, they tell you where you are going, not the other way around. Good luck. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coasties all have major bases on Oahu. If you're lucky there will be other surfers in your unit you can hook up with.

 

There's a lot of restricted beach front property here in Va. Some with potential for the best (for here) waves. Most on military bases, but the best is a sanctuary, Fisherman's Island. You can surf off of it, but illegal to step foot on it.

 

From my experience with friends in the military, I don't believe I would go that route when looking to surf more. They don't really have much free time. When they are off, they are usually pretty worn out.

 

Oh, I was stationed in Okinawa for 6th months as artillery attachment to 12th Marines. Guess how many times I surfed...zero. The opportunity to surf was never really possible. The marine corps is no joke, it will change your life. Unfortunately there's not a lot of time to consider surfing, at least not until after first 2 years. Its possible but not really part of your mentality as a junior marine. Sad answer, but honest.

 

the last night before I left Colorado for the coast, we went to a "woodsie". it's a party up in the mountains, usually on private property. My best friend and I got tore up and decided to join the marines on the buddy system. But gawd intervened. A friend of mine from a fort in Alabama, 2 years prior, heard me laughing in a VW camper and walked in. He bought a motorcycle and left his parents in Dugway Utah, and was invited to the party by someone he met in Colo Spgs. We told him we were going to go into town and join up. He reminded me of everything we saw growing up. We stayed at the party. Remember not to drink, chirren.
That's how yer ol uncle Chich became a surfer.

 

idk but i live in sd and theres a fire reef break at the end of point loma which is all military, it only accesible by boat but if u catch it right youll be stoked for dayssss, i wont drop the name but if u find point loma naval base your on top of it, then all u will need is a boat

Coast Guard (Guardies) have walk-in access to the point from the lighthouse....it's theirs, not the Navy's. Navy station is further inside, but have roads that lead to the point. I worked there during 81-82 and scored back in the day. The place is a zoo now, it looks like a harbor full of zodiacs on any south swell. Way better to take a boat to any of the 6-8 reefs between this place and the unnamed semi-point south of Nazboland.

 

This is a special that was done on surfing at Pt Mugu, Ventura County, CA.

I wonder if anyone ever surfed Diego Garcia; that place looks amazing for driving, fishing, etc. The gov barely acknowledges that it exists. It's in the Indian Ocean if you've never heard of it.

 

Find the beach break you like and move there. Don't rely on the military. I haven't heard of any good breaks in Afghanistan. Besides, it's easier to surf with all of your limbs attached.
