I love being stuck in SC. I wish I was there right now. But if surfing is all you are concerned with, the East Coast will never compare to Cali. There are a lot of Jersey transplants down in SC. They hate Jersey, move south, then complain when certain things aren't like Jersey.
BE, next thing they will be moving to Denver NJ and taking over everything! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjVSXib6ov4
without a doubt take the opportunity now and expand your horizons. i lived in pacific beach in San Diego when i was out there and live outside of ocean city nj now. i surfed a sh!load more when i lived out there. yeah the summers get small but not as small as it gets here. plus you get some good southswells during the summer to break up those small inconsistent days. plus you can go to blacks and always catch a little something.
don't know if it's still like that, but, yeah, ventura used to be pretty gnarly. Pretty sure a lot of that was fueled by meth and coke abuse at the time. In the late 80s, we were chased by a pack of ventura locals because my friend had some neon on his wetsuit (he found the suit and was all he had). He was also a black belt in karate and decided to turn around and get in a stance (which really freaked me out)...they all stopped in their tracks and backed off. north of santa barbara is completely different...but with it's own set of compromises
are you retarded? is a place with groundswells on a regular basis better than a state with ****ty windswells and close outs? hahahaha.
No Jersey is way better. That's why it's the surf mecca of the world. All the major brands are in Jersey and all the pros move there.
I guess I'm the exception. Came out here with no leads, crashed on a friends couch. Landed a great job in 21 days & now I live at the beach and surf erreyday. You never know unless you go!
People go there because of the much better waves, and come back because of family. At least those people I've known. I haven't met anyone yet who came back to the east coast because they missed our great waves.
cali compared to jersey.wow.lol what kind of comparison is that.hmmm would u rather go on vacation to Hawaii or mexico city.5star restaurant or mcdonalds?sandbars or points?sandbars or reefs?sandbars or mavs?to the west they have Hawaii, below they have more world class breaks in mexico.here in nj,we have sandbars.to the north of us is sandbars,to the south of us are sandbars.jersey fukin sucks lol,and I can say that cus im a lifelong resident.
This is a great thread, been a minute since I've popped in, just wanted to comment and say what's up. To the OP, dude, i'm mean.... dude.... seriously?
Depends on the circumstances, I guess; but most of the people I knew (none of whom surfed) who moved to CA from PA, OH, NY, etc. didn't go back nor wanted to. Primary reason: the weather. More specifically: the snowy, winter weather. I like the seasons and variety in the weather. One of the reasons I transferred from CA to VA.
we have seasons out here...wet and dry (about 8 months of cloudless sun every day, all day, and 4 months rain storms about 3 weeks apart). If you want snow, you just have to drive out of the valley 2 hours and 7000 feet up into the mtns to get it....and do we get it. To put it in perspective, almost every year we get at least one storm that dumps over 8 feet of snow. 2 years ago, we got 12 feet in a 5 day period...so deep, it's too dangerous to snowboard in.
To the real locals of Rincon: I'm so sorry that your wave is a super zoo. It's complete sacrilege. I checked it once and it was good. 5 guys would take off, 5 more would drop in on them and so on right down the point. That is such a waste of magic. I had the honor of surfing with TC (that's Tom Curren ok Jeffrey) at Mussel Shoals instead that day. It was no Rincon but super fun anyway. The parking lot at Rincon has municipally posted signage warning about rampant theft and plenty of colorful up to date signs created by recent theft victims. Meth is an issue in California unfortunately. One evening at the Lane a loc-dawg (I guess) shoulder checked me while paddling past me during his initial paddle out. I kind of laughed it off and thought "wow, that was interesting". He got an ok wave leaving me to get the wave of the evening right after that. I deliberately laid out a thick hack in the pocket on the first section for loc-dawg to see and it was no worries after that.
