2 board quiver

Hypto krypto. Super fun, can handle in bigger waves depending on skill set.

 

I have quite a few boards but I really only use two. My 9'0 longboard and a 6'3 single fin. I can surf any condition we get here on long island with these two boards. I don't remember the exact dims of either board but if you want to know I can go check.

I know you said you want a board that isn't just rideable but that you can "rip" on in anything. "Ripping" isn't exactly my style if you couldn't tell by my 2 main boards being single fins so I wouldn't suggest you go get exactly what I ride. My point is ride what your comfortable on and appeals to you and you will be fine. Longboards are not just for small days. In fact the way I chose between the 9'0 or 6'3 is by judging what the wave has to offer. Regardless of size, if the waves are weak looking, slopey/mushy I ride the 9'0. if the waves have more juice and are more hollow or step, I use the 6'3, again regardless of size.

 

for summer mush wouldn't you want to ride a log? the aforementioned board would be for good days. talk to a local shaper and see what they have to offer, i've had good luck doing so. my quiver is down to 3 boards, all locally shaped. 9'0 log, 5'2 mini simmons, 5'6 slimmons (performance take on the mini simmons). my goal is not really to rip though, just get the most fun waves i can.

 

My quiver consists of 2 shortboards, actually more, but really only 2 boards I use...got a quad fish (vernon bullet - love this board) with more then my standard volume...perfect for knee to waist high mush but still can handle the heavier wave...and another board for waist to overhead + with standard amount of volume for my weight.

Today looks like small scale surf with some texture...gonna have to grab the bullet today.

 

If i had to have only a two board quiver it most definately wouldnt include a longboard, with all of the amazing small wave shortboard advances.

For mushy waves/less than stomach high wave i would get a Mini Simmons hybrid grovelor like a Roberts Mush Machine/JS Pier Pony type board. Like 5'6" x 21" with a flat rocker.

The other board would be for chest high and up. Performance oriented.

For me, those two board would cover 95% of the conditions I find myself surfing in.

 

with any class at all I'd say a wavejet and a roy stuart. The roy s for standing there pretending to surf, and the wavejet for charging mavericks!

 

I primarily use a custom from a shaper working under the guys at Essence Surf (NJ shapers) that's an exact copy of the hypto krypto 5-10 version. I was able to ride a friends hypto and just loved it. But couldn't afford 650$ for my own at that time. I ride my custom copy of it, all the time when the waves are good. Last Monday there were some fast hollow barrels that my old 6-3 dagger would have been better, but the krypto copy handled pretty great. My mush board is a 5-8 Walden fish with fcs tri fin set up. Its like a skateboard, loose and very easy to cruise on mushy waves. If I had a ton of dough (I don't- I'm a writer) I would buy the Hayden shapes shred sled or a chemistry wide 6. (I love boards with more volume for paddling and loose turns). Blah, blah, I used those two boards all this year and had fun. At 34 im not punting airs, I just enjoy speeding down face and try and make nice turns. Those two boards have helped me rediscover my mojo. (stopped surfing for almost 8 years while in the united states marine corps, and started back up in 2011.) Good luck with your next purchase, can't go wrong with a hypto krypto

5 fin rocket fish and high performance thruster... bada bing bada boom... Throw a longboard in their and I'm set for life.

Can't agree more with Mattyb---hypto and SS a great combo...rode this set up for two years and only had issues at 2' OH in winter. If you have the money I would suggest both boards (also, from Global these boards run for around $750 or so--only a $100 more for an OTR CI)...recently ordered another shred sled--can't wait!
