Last year I decided to drag my girlfriend from our humble little cottage in wakefield, rhode island taker her on a month long road trip and finally settle in Utah. My job would allow me to leave her for 16 days a month and lead kids around the desert convincing them that life didnt suck as bad as they made it out to be. On october 16th I voluntarily took a lay off so that we could hang out more, and move further west. For the past month and a half I had plans to travel north from san clemente then around the PNW surfing and such.... We sat down tonight, after a month brutal arguments, too much stress, and tension that you could cut with a knife and had "that" talk. We mutually agreed that we must retreat back east with out tails between our legs, to start over and establish some roots rather than being homeless. Turns out having no money, no job, and living in van is unattractive to the female species. One day when I have money and cahones, I will convince her that the Van is the only way for our relationship to work.
Well, it was worth a shot, right...you'll be alright, man...come back home and be prepared for flatness.
hell yea, its been good, learned alot about myself and life and am ready to return. And a flat ocean has more swell than a dry desert.
MIS, you are a natural at writing fortunes for fortune cookies! Let's hope this one comes true for SWL
I can't believe you convinced her that living in the van was a good idea in the first place. I mean don't get me wrong, I think it's cool but my lady would have jumped ship and the mere sound of that. You got a tough lady man! Good on you for compromising.
You both took the risk and gave it a shot. It's the old American spirit - like the settlers moving west in the 1800s. Have to give her credit as well. But I believe most women eventually want to unhitch the team, build their "nest", and put down roots. Best of luck with everything.
In 01 the wife and I made the move to CR. 2 months in her mother tells her she's sick and needs her home. Never wanted anything to do with her in her previous life. I guess finding out she was content, happy, and free of pain made her sick.
what do you mean "tails between our legs"... more like tail between your legs. You can't be surprised that your girl friend wanted out of this.... you'll be lucky if her next step isn't leaving you! but... if it all worked out for the best she'd probably take the credit for it! lol.
If you didn't go, you would have thought that it would have been awesome. The grass is always greener indeed. I came within an inch of selling everything and moving to PR. In retrospect I'm glad I didn't. A friend moved there 2 years ago and is sometimes so broke, he can't even make it to isabela to surf when rincon is flat, which is more often than not during summer. Being broke sucks.
IF she sticks with you after this is all said and done then I say wife her because you won't find many women willing to put up with that, i'm lucky to have a wife that even comes to the beach with me even when she would rather be in bed sleeping, but I know without a doubt she wouldn't be willing to pack everything up and live out of a van, no way, no how. You make it outta this one in one piece and you can thank your lucky stars.
hahaha, Makeitstop, that was awesome... and no lets not hope for this. I am hoping no grungier vixen comes my way, I've decided that a girl that is Ok with riding around in an old cargo van with faded verizon decals is grungy enough. Grungy enough to hold onto. The grass is always greener, and while the west coast may have the waves, east coast is home. Happy to head back
It can work, you are just past that point in life in which you can make it work. Once your lady has kids they adventure tends to fall out of them too! Have no fear its not over.... usually upon retirement a lot of couples decide to pack it up and just travel. My wife and I did something similar, we sold the house and vehicles, belongings, etc.... bought our own tractor trailer and drove team cross country. Yes we basically lived in a closet on wheels but the difference was we were making a lot of money. Sometimes that factor seems to drive your lady a little harder. Also the fact that we were doing this so that she could have her own horse training facility. So with that being said if your ol' lady don't want to go with you.... GET RID OF HER!!!! Take your girl back east drop her off, turn that van south, cross that little river in Texas and don't look back! When you finally break down, run out of gas, find the perfect wave, etc... park that thing in the sand, hang your hat and call it home! No wetsuit required...
Unfortunately I like her, so I will not be getting rid of her. There are far worse situations I could be in. Having some money is going to be cool too. Being a dirtbag is tiring.
