Just wondering how many/if any of you brahs use a "base coat" when when applying a fresh layer of wax to your naked boards. I personally never have.. and never really had a problem with getting that first layer to stick... but maybe Im missing out on epic traction so I have to ask the surf gurus of swellinfo
eh, once in a while. it isn't really necessary just kind of nice if you can make it happen sort of thing.
I do. For me it's not getting the wax to stick its so it lasts longer. I scrape my boards clean only once or twice a year so a hard base coat gives a solid foundation. That way the topcoat doesn't get all mushy and smear around because the base coat keeps nice hard bumps.
I like putting on some base coat or tropical (if I have some left over from a trip) down first. Its not about getting the wax to stick....its like the guy above said - if your cool/cold water top coat starts to smear on a warm day better to have some hard base coast bumps underneath.
Agreed. I strip my boards in the spring when the sun gets high enough to start melting the cold wax quickly. I use base usually through July because it doesn't melt in the heat. As the sun recedes I use warm, cool, cold. Though I should add I got a couple bars of sticky bumps tropical this summer because that's all they had and it melted in the sun in about 5 min. Never buy it again.
i do. most of my boards are finished w/ a sanded gloss or polished gloss, not just a sanded hotcoat & i've found that the basecoat seems to stay on the board better & not smear as easily. that said, it pretty much makes the board a ***** to strip when the wax needs changing.
I am a proud supporter of base coat.. I notice a slight difference in bumps, but notice a major difference in how long the wax stays on when compared to no base coat. I wanna try some sticky bumps munkey and punt. Any one try that ish?
I use base coat in case the sun kills my cold water wax. Also, try using basecoat on a hammer handle in the summer. If you're pounding nails all day, keeps a nice grip on the hammer.
personally, I think basecoat in cold water is a marketing gimmick...but it's harder/melts less than warm water wax in the tropic's summer heat
I have never used a base coat since i change my wax several times a year. is it good in all temps? i have great traction w/o it.
