I tried to re-highjack the WTF with my life thread to no avail.

So to help out the \"entitlement generation,\" I thought us older folks might tell them some stories of what we were like, what our ambitions were, and what our thought processes were in our late teens early twenties.

This is me, circa 1980: If I didn't live in Syracuse, NY back then, I'm sure surfing would have been a priority on my list.

True story: My senior year of high school, my counselor asked me what I wanted to do to prepare for college. I told her I wanted to learn how to juggle, open a beer bottle with my teeth, and then snap a beer cap across a room with accuracy. She then asked what did I plan to do in college with this skill set. I told her I planned on joining a punk rock band.
I'm proud to say I managed to reach all of those early goals. I advise against opening too many beer bottles with your teeth.
Now I'm a productive member of society.
Because I want to be relevant!!!

I inherited a talent for drawing and graphic design, in general, so I just figured I'd be in some segment of the art field at some point...obviously, so did my parents, because they never encouraged me or really paid much attention to me at all (or any of my siblings, for that matter). My stepmother was rich and so they just threw money at any and all issues. High school just ended up being an expensive babysitter for me.

I wish I had a counselor in high school. A couple of teachers told me I was stupid and worthless, but none of them ever encouraged me. Barely managed to graduate high school, yet my parents were still ready to blindly fork out for college. I surfed most of the time and dropped out after 2 years.

In hindsight, I should have bludgeoned the high school bullies, been kicked out and taken the GED. I, then, should have immediately gone to the musicians institute (guitar) or culinary school. A chef's hours are long, but you never go hungry and you can work anywhere (if you're really good, at tropical, world class surf spots).

As far as art, that's a sketchy business (pun intended) in which to make decent money...the freelancing "starving artist" is the norm.

At 16 I decided I wanted to work in banking and financial services. I have been a loan officer, stock broker/financial planner and now work in commercial insurance. I have known since I was a little boy that I wanted to be a business man, hell when I was in my 20's I loved wearing suits and just like Barney on How I met your mother was rarely seen with out one in public. I have always loved money and power and noticed early on that those went hand in hand with the financial services industry.

    Yo, you got xanax?

I never wanted to be anything when I was in my teens except maybe a rock star. For a year, I wanted to be Jay Reale.

But in the larger picture I never really wanted to be anything...........

    So I technically I am a success...........

I wanted to marry a hottie that was at least somewhat sane. I accomplished that. She's a hottie and is as sane as any woman can be.

Beyond that I just want when I die and my life flashes before my eyes for it to take a while. No 3 seconds and out. Lots of highlights. Like "Dr Zhivago" long but with a lot more booze/etc. and a ton more silliness. Maybe an epic mini-series of stupidity and debauchery. When Death comes he brings a case-o-beer as he knows it will be a long and entertaining ride and we kick back and watch the show.

Yeah, I can see that. Death clinking beers w\ me and saying "Holy sh*T, I remember that, I thought I had you that time for sure! How the hell did you make it out of that one? And where did that goat from from? That was hilarious!"

Beyond that...give everything I can to my kids/fam/friends and die with no possessions just a sh*T ton of kick-ass memories. And have an Irish wake.

I'm 1 for 2 so far, won't know if I accomplished number 2 until the big day comes. Then I move on to my next job. Devil's gonna get a pink slip when I get there!

    come on guys,saying u wanted a chick doesn't count,unless ur a struggling gaybo.

I wanted to be a graphic designer when I was a kid.i painted and still paint canvases my entire life, and also been taking pictures, but I never tried to sell my work or act like im the shyt.thats why I laugh at all these new photogs that pop up every year, they get a new expensive camera for Christmas and take a black and whte pic and say hey im a photog u can buy my ugly picture for 30 bucks.these kids,il put money on it,never developed their own film, probably don't even know what film is.anyway, bob ross was my idol when I was in my teens.i painted every canvas he did, still got them recorded on vhs.iv always been a hands on type a guy so im not into office work or a job where u sit all day.i get dirty every day,i washed my hands 3 times since I got off work and I still have primer stuck all over my hands.now im a mechanic working on bulldozers, and I don't get paid shyt.i basically do everything, carpentry, mechanics, welding, forming, molding, and a little bit of electrical.

I never thought id be one to get into surfing,i hated the beach as a kid and was scared shytless of it.i spent my early youth in long island and the water gets pretty rough for a 5yr old,id get swept out and my dad would be sleepin on the beach.i almost died so many times lol.when I was young I never seen a surfer, never seen someone ride a wave and basically had no clue what was what.then one day a friend from school asked if I wanted to go surfing, and we did and eventually I started surfing as a hobby, like painting and taking pictures.i don't get the people who say they surf everyday, like do u live in the same state as I?i work near the ocean, and live by the ocean, and I drive past 30 different surf spots on the way to work, and its usually flat.i skateboarded a lot as a kid since I was eventually moved to the city.i lived in woodbridge like 12 years ago,and I used to walk from homestead ave to the woodbridge train station with 2 boards under my arm to go hop on the train down to lb or point or Asbury.it was like a 6mile walk to the train station, maybe even more.if that's not determination I don't know wtf is.now theres surfers everywhere and I truly hate it.when I started skating,if 30 other people popped up and skated every street I was on I would've quit.i like to do things most people don't,like jumping in the ocean in January during a 6ft swell, but it seems like everyone does it now lol.

I wanted to be a programmer, now I'm a partner in a software/IT services company... although the path to get there was kinda crazy (involved dropping out of high school, living in the woods for a while, etc).

I also wanted to do a girl doggy style while another girl lies underneath her and licks my balls... still has not happened.

I had no direction other than to get the hell out of my house and eventually end up happy. As a kid I was always starting businesses of one kind or another to make some scratch. As I got older I learned that I hated going to "work" where I had to take crap from a boss who 9 times out of 10 was not as smart as I was. Turns out college was too much like work and I dropped out and started working mindless jobs so that I could keep my head my own. During these brainless activities my mind would wonder the universe as I would try to find my way forward. I started many small businesses on the side, some made money others didn't but I was learning the whole time. I eventually started a business that is seasonal and gives me lots of time to surf and continue to anticipate the next "big" move. I'm not rich but I have a nice house close to the beach, a great wife and son and a lot of friends and most important my mind is my own which is worth more than money to me.

I had a dream of one day going out in the world and spreading the word about the importance of punctuation and the use of the return key and space bar in making long screeds at lease somewhat readable. Alas, I have clearly failed.

If you are going to realistically pull a 3 way, you cant degrade any members of the party, one on the lap and one on the face is the way to go, not that Id know anything about it, I'm just guessing.....

and I am genuinely sorry to threadjack here, please, as you were.....

I wanted to have a life that allowed me to surf comfortably; so it can be said that i built my life around surfing. I needed a job to give me enough free time to chase a nice swell and the money to not worry about gas, food, repairs or more than one board. As i always tell people, I work to live not live to work. The location right now could be a lot better, South Padre Island, TX, but that had to do with my parents due to their age. One definitely important message is whatever you decide to settle for make sure you hurry up and do it already cause time waits for no one. I got my job when i was 22 working for the Federal Aviation Admin and i still had thoughts like yours. Well good luck on your life but don't drag your ass too much and if you love surfing as much as i do then use it as your main motivation to get your life sorted out.
