One of the funniest things I remember about Phil Collins is when he presented a music award to U2 in the early 80's. The band was sitting at a pub in Ireland and they did a remote acceptance. Bono Said to Phil, "Phil Collins? Me Mum loves you! She has all your albums." I can't wait for U2 to give an award to some young upstart band and get the same treatment.

Well I’ll go there ..

First, I want to preface this that I believe that all people warrant consideration and dignity as human beings, regardless of beliefs or life style choices.

What I want to know is,
1. Is the statement:
“I believe _______ is a sin” hate speech towards those that do _______? To get the idea, fill in the blank with something like, gossip, slander, sloth, promiscuity, drunkenness, dropping in, etc.
2. Why do people (in general) who do not seem to hold in esteem or believe the concept of “sin” or of a God who holds people accountable care what someone else says is “sin”?
3. And more generally, why do people get so worked up about what people say about what they do? People are not God, and if He exists (or rather if one believes He exists), shouldn’t that be their concern, rather than what man says? There have been many threads where people get bent about what others say about what they do or how they live. I get that people do not like be judged, but why take some much stock in what is said on, as my bud says, a “surf predictn web site”?

I don’t watch DD, and from what I understand this fellow Phil was responding to questions he was asked in a magazine interview, and has the right to express his opinion. He probably could have framed what he believed a little better, but he said what he said. I also realize that A&E has the right to fire anyone they want for any reason. But calling I think deeming what he said hate speech is a little over the top, especially when framed in everything else he has said.

I do realize that hate crimes do happen and need to be dealt with, along with all crime, however, aren't most crimes fueled by hate, or an excessive selfishness, or a lack or concern for others?

Personally, I’ve gone through life, had people say negative things and given me grief about what I believe or do, but it has never crossed my mind to invoke or unleash the authorities or make a public spectacle. We have become very thin skinned as a society.

What you have to ask yourself is when will the thought police come knocking when you express what you think, if it is contrary to what they think, deem “politically correct” or appropriate?

 

I can't play anywhere near like I used to, and I was a hot drummer. It doesn't bother me, because frankly, if you get to that point where you can't hold a drumstick properly, there are many other things in life which are far more important, like cutting a loaf of bread or a piece of cheese.

Thanks & yep. I liked the work of Genesis as a whole better than Phil's solo work, which is usually the case when artists go off single. Like in most endevours, the group working together is greater than the sum of the individual parts.

 

Wait a minute...I don't watch tv, so maybe something went over my head...does Phil Collins hate funny people too(funny queer, not funny haha)...did he defend the duck dynasty guy? Or pump are you just a big Phil Collins fan?

*cdog of the great cape-I totally agree w/ ya. I mean there's things I'm way more concerned about than gay rights and such, that being said it doesn't bother me if they get married, etc...but tolerance doesn't mean acceptance...the guy shouldn't be chastized just b/c he spoke his opinion, and from what I've gathered, what he said wasn't really that offensive.

Never saw an episode myself, but by god, you can get an entire wardrobe and bedroom suite at the Walmart with those guys' faces plastered all over 'em!

Ahhh, aight, thanks for that SCREWB...yeah man I never saw it, but all I see are shirts that say Uncle Si this and Uncle Si that...are peoples' lives that empty that they'll enthusiastically jump on whatever bandwagon is being sold to them? Those duck guys really blew up, to use the parlance of our times. Anywho, as I'm not too familiar w/ Genesis, I won't further derail this thread...
